hmm..interesting

Biggest printer in the world.

Biggestprinterworld

This Mitsubishi DiamondStar 90 printing press is apparently the biggest printing system in the world ,and can print out 90,000 complete full colour broadsheet newspapers an hour. The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper of Japan has four of them linked together that can produce 100 newspapers a second. One question. How many trees, dude, how many trees?

  1. Trees are evil and have a smug attitude about themselves anyway. They need to build a few hundred of these in South America and take care of the tree menace once and for all.

Wow. My question is: how long does it take to re-thread those bad boys when the paper breaks?

Once in another life I spent time working in a printing plant. I was a ‘production assistant’. PA’s are the guys who make sure the press operator has everything he needs – ink, paper, boxes for the output, and so on. We would also help the pressman when he needed it – typically, re-threading the press or changing plates or something. Our biggest press (the one I worked on) was around 90 feet long and took about a half hour to re-thread. If the pressman ran too fast, or got things out of alignment, BAM! The paper would break and we’d have to rethread.

So this monster is 4 stories tall! That must take forever to rethread!

(another useless anecdote from your friend Bryan)

Well I’ve seen the ones at our newspaper’s printing works at Wapping and they’re big enough, thanks very much. :-) And as for the size of the paper rolls, good grief. These ones must need a 10 tonne truck to move them around.
