I have done a similar project called the Remote Sniper, which can control TV’s, VCR’s from as far away as you can see with a telescope or binoculars. I hacked a green laser pointer to get at the 808nm 500mw diode, and this is modulated directly by the universal remote output and a transistor. The collimating lens is set to spread the beam to about the size of a living room window at 1000 feet or so. To aim the unit, the infrared beam is viewed on a video monitor using a low lux black and white camera (sees infrared).
