Songbird and Democracy – Open Source starts to flower

SongbirdDemocracy

If anyone needs proof that the Open Source movement is becoming a seriously important factor in the world of software, they only have to look as far as the two newest arrivals on the scene.

Songbird and Democracy are two media players – music and video respectively – which have the potential to blow the bloated, DRM enslaved commercial alternatives out of the water. Make no mistake, this stuff is not just good because it’s free, it’s good because it’s well coded, superbly designed and genuinely useful product. It’s time to stop mocking the geeks, dude.

We have two crucial advantages over traditional software companies. First, being a non-profit organization means our mission is to support our users, not create profits for investors. Second, by making our software free and open-source, anyone can contribute to helping us make the best video application in the world. Democracy Player is not just an innovative user experience. Our engineers have created a new approach to building a cross-platform application. Using some of the best open-source technologies, including Mozilla, XUL Runner, VLC, and Python, we have created a new software platform.
