Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1 TB Hard Disk Drive. 1 TB? One terabyte??? ONE THOUSAND thousand thousand thousand bytes??? In a single 3.5 inch drive???? At a $344.99 street price? Are you people all out of your cotton picking tree? Don’t you know that this is ridiculous? They’re Winchester drives for Pete’s sake, they’ll never hold more than 10 MB tops on those slow, clunky 8 inch platters. Everyone knows that. What are you guys smoking? Sheesh!

According to Hitachi, the drive will hold around 330,000 3MB photos or 250,000 MP3 tracks. Ho hum!

Perhaps it’s just me, but I was expecting the laws of physics to be broken, or something, by now. Otherwise it’s just progress… Though I am salavating at the the possibilities for such uses involving decentralized file sharing…

Maybe these drives will usher in the second coming?

How times change… I can still remember my first PC with a 20MB hard drive. It felt huge and a big leap forward from my previous dual-floppy system. Ha… the memories:-)

After all the years of reading about alternative data storage solutions (holographic, molecular, perpendicular, quantum and others I can’t remember now), Terabyte drives don’t seem as large anymore. The multimedia explosion has already happened, so hard drive manufacturers are still playing catch-up.

For larger data storage needs, folks are still focusing on this older technology via clusters, grids, arrays… it’ll be interesting to see how things change (if they do) when some of these mostly research solutions ever become practical.
