FuelPod2 – produce 50 litres of biodiesel a day at home from waste cooking oil

Fuelpod2

FuelPod2 is a ‘plug and play’ home biofuel processor. Just pour that nasty waste chip fat into one end and out the other comes lovely cheap and ecologically pleasant biodiesel. The makers say that the fuel is good enough to run any standard diesel engined car without modifications, and it won’t affect your performance either. It’s cheaper too, of course, which means that it should pay for itself very quickly, especially with the rocketing price of crude at the moment. Your only challenge? Finding enough waste oil, so you may have to go scrounging around your local restaurants and bars with a smile and large – very large – pot. Good luck. Priced from £2056.00.

With just a 60cm diameter and at only 140cm high FuelPod2 sits easily at the back of the garage and is operated via a compressor. If you’re interested in the science, it uses CE and ATEX approved process with air control to avoid any sparks. Safe Band technology heats the oil in a thermostatically controlled heater within an integral heating tank, prior to mixing with methanol added from a separate tank…

  • It might be the fuel of future as already a Jet (BioJet 1) had a test flight powered 100% on Cooking oil! The only problem is as you mentioned where to find waste oil.
On the other hand maybe soon the normal cooking oil will be cheaper than oil!

    • would you like supplier of cooking oil used? I could find large amount of this one…

    • a chip shop or restarant anywhere like that really they should either sell it very cheap to u or give it too u

  • Ali, I can’t imagine how many burgers you have to eat to power a jet! :-)

  • That is true! two many burgers needed for a jet to fly! On the other hand even if the oil is just produced for this purpose from seeds it might be that the Co2 produced by the plants producing these seeds are almost the same CO2 produced by normal fuel! ;-)

  • Interesting BUT..
Converting fuel uses energy and is ‘dirty’ from an environmental point of view (see very understated mention of extra methanol tank). Far better is adjusting the ENGINE so it can run on vegoil directly. This solution is carbon neutral as the oil seed crop absorbs more carbon, as it grows, than it releases when it is combusted, and of course you can still use filtered waste veg oil (WVO). Rudolph Diesel designed the diesel engine to run on peanut oil and only when massive natural reserves of petro-oil were found was the engine modified to run on this seemingly endless fuel supply (oh the irony!). Do yourself and the planet a favour and spend your 2000 smackers on a conversion to veg oil rather than the intermediary solution of this converter which will leave you with gallons of glycerine as its byproduct (also not mentioned). In addition there is a NET-ENERGY implication which is where the energy used to produce the fuel is less in total than the energy actually released from it (when you factor transporting the bio-oil to the refinery, splitting it, and then distributing it again- not to mention the costs to the environment). Remember, the big petro companies have a vested interest in people buying into the whole bio-diesel fairy-tale as bio-diesel still has to be PROCESSED; Otherwise what the hell are they going to do with their refineries when the petro industry finally crumbles, bio-D keeps them in operation splitting the oil THAT CAN AND SHOULD BE PUT STRAIGHT INTO YOUR TANK! Sure, bio-diesel is greener than petrodiesel because it comes from a crop BUT ITS NOT THE ANSWER!
Some more reasons to convert your engine rather than the fuel:
    1) Veg oil is a far superior lubricant than petro oil, reducing engine wear and extending your servicing periods
    2) Producing, and then using veg oil locally, is obviously more efficient
    3) Do the work on your vehicle ONCE rather than every time you need more fuel
    4) The calorific value of veg oil is slightly higher than petro diesel, more miles for your gallon
    5) You can still use regular diesel (or any kind of oil actually) in your tank if you are stuck away from your normal supply.

Anyway, dont take my word for it- there is a rapidly increasing lobby for this technology and the engine makers are starting to listen, promising true MULTIFUEL engines shortly.
    Go educate yourself!

  • Richard, thanks for that info, very interesting indeed. Er..any links? :-)

  • Should I use soybean oil that i already used?
