Freegal – free legal access to MP3 music downloads via your local library

Freegal

Regular users of their local book library in the US may soon be offered a new music download service called Freegal. The service will let library card holders download up to 20 DRM free MP3 tracks a week, as well as set up a wishlist for future downloads. The catalogue? Sony Music’s 50 labels, which contains hundreds of thousands of songs in the major genres. There’s no word yet as to whether additional labels will join the scheme later.

It’s also not clear whether the users will have to pay for the tracks or whether it will be a free loaner service as with books, but the libraries are certainly having to commit to an annual spend depending on their userbase numbers. We assume that after the end of the loan period, users will be expected to delete the tracks instead of returning them to the hard disk from which they came. Interesting. More here.

Library users have a weekly download limit. You will be able to keep track of your downloads in the upper right corner of the site. Every song has a sample clip you can listen to before you download. # The library may have an overall weekly limit, too. If your library runs out of downloads for the week, you can go to “My Wishlist” in the upper right corner and queue up for future music. # The downloads on this site are all in the MP3 format with no DRM. This service will work with any MP3 player, including iPod, and can be loaded into iTunes. It works on both PCs and Macs.
