One box to bind them…

The Onebox from Niveas Media is the latest in sitting room convergence technology. The small 12 inches by 12 inches box contains a 1GHz processor, ATI TV tuner card for telly, DVD drive, 80GB hard drive and PVR software. Of course these things have been coming and going for years, but at $999.00 at least this one has got a sensible pricetag.

40 hour laptops on their way…slowly

NEC has released details of its fuel cell powered laptop computer which it says should be able to run for 5 hours on a single charge. Not awesomely impressive, but the company does follow up by saying that it expects to be producing 40 hour laptop versions within two years. Now that IS impressive.

Do we really need a brain?

Fascinating – and apparently kosher – article discussing the strange phenomenon of people who appear to have very little brain matter inside their skulls. Please banish all tawdry jokes about Italian prime ministers from your minds immediately. [via metafilter]

Ticketing the touts

Scarlet Mist is a neat idea, a free Web site specifically for the private exchange of tickets for rock festivals. A sort of Loot for tickets. To be honest there should be a site which lets you do this for all types of events, anything to avoid being scalped by the touts eh?

Spin wave theory

Now this is a fascinating, if deeply arcane, site. The Vasant Corporation is the brainchild of one George J. Bugh, senior staff aerospace electronics engineer who appears to have devoted a lifetime to researching the hidden properties of electromagnetic waves. His conclusion? ‘The results conclude that some devices can generate economically free energy. This study also concludes there is a possible link between gravity and electromagnetism that can be exploited to generate antigravity or electrogravity effects.’ The real problem is…

Snap, click, send…

Aunty is reporting on an innovative new use for camera phones in Japan. Basically it involves taking snaps of stuff in shops to send to friends. ‘They might spot a new hairstyle or a new dress in a glossy fashion magazine and they want to know what their friends think – so they take a quick snap with their mobile phone camera and send everybody a picture. But the publishers of those magazines feel they are being cheated out of…

Swedish company Print Dreams has just announced the Print Brush, which they say is the smallest format independent printer. It uses Bluetooth for data intake and I’ve got to say that the printouts look remarkably good for such a teeny tiny product. Check out the calendar on the home page. No word on price yet.

Killer stress

Apparently scientists have just learned why stress kills. It seems that it’s all down to a sharp increase of a chemical called Interleukin-6 in the bloodstream. Now of course we’ll have to wait for the inevitable antidote ‘magic bullet’ cures to arrive on the market. Never mind trying to locate the cause of the stress in the first place. [via boingboing]
