USB to Firewire.

Wow, a USB to Firewire cable. Jolly useful, although it’s only for camcorder video use. ‘The Japanese peripheral maker Pixela has developed a new type of USB video cable that transfers raw DV from a FireWire camcorder to a typical Hi-Speed USB host desktop or notebook, and vice versa.’

Weather or not.

There are weather sites and then there’s Metcheck. Not only a fabbo rain radar display like the one above with direction, speed and location in real time, but SMS rain alerts to your mobile phone for 10p a go if rain is falling within 30 km of you, a BBQ forecast and even a tube (subway folks, OK?) temperature guide. Simply awesome resource. ‘Not only is it fully customisable, allowing you to schedule the alerts, change the sensitivity detection and…

eCycle.

The eCycle. A hybrid petrol/electric motorbike offering 180 mpg, a top speed of 80 mph and acceleration of 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. ‘To accelerate from a standstill, the control system senses the throttle input and then delivers torque to the electric motor. This causes the vehicle to begin moving forward and also causes the engine to begin spinning. At low speeds, no fuel is delivered to the engine, so the engine does not yet provide any power.’

All that jazz.

The rather beautiful and spiffily elegant Brown Crosley Record Player makes one wish that one had a bally old record collection worth playing, what? Rather than just a warped, scratched copy of Harry Belafonte singing calypso ballads from the 1940’s. Sigh. $99.00

The Ferret understands that there is an AutoExec Coffin version launching soon which will wring that very last drop of productivity out of you,…

The GeekDIY site is pretty cool. Especially if you’re a techie with waaaay too much time on your hands. I mean, where else would you find a link to a site which teaches you how to make a full size remote control car?

Cruise control.

Adaptive Cruise Control is not, as you may think, a method of keeping young Tom and Penelope out of harm’s way, but is in fact a method of using computers to control vehicles and so avoid accidents, traffic jams and the like. Breakthrough new tech? – RoadEye Radar which is currently under test in the DenseTraffic project. ‘These 2nd generation ACC systems will be able to stay in control of a vehicle’s engine and brakes at speeds of anything between…

Dream clean.

Self cleaning clothes? That sound you hear is Mssrs Proctor & Gamble spinning in their final rinse graves. ‘Scientists have invented an efficient way to coat cotton cloth with tiny particles of titanium dioxide. These nanoparticles are catalysts that help to break down carbon-based molecules, and require only sunlight to trigger the reaction. The inventors believe that these fabrics could be made into self-cleaning clothes that tackle dirt, environmental pollutants and harmful microorganisms.’

Hush now.

Apparently there’s work afoot to quiet down computers using active noise cancelling technology of the sort found in those expensive headphones at airports. Dr Scott D. Sommerfeldt has produced a system that works in exactly the same way to cancel out the noise of the fan. [Via Fred Langa’s rather excellent LangaList] ‘Dr. Sommerfeldts system has four miniature speakers and four even tinier microphones set in a ring around the computer fan. The microphones and other sensors detect the noise…

Energize!

Auntie has a rather scary – in a Terminator/Matrix kind of way – article on recent scientific successes in teleportation using what Einstein called ‘spooky action’. They’ll soon be teleporting our genetically engineered super clones all around the universe at this rate, you mark my words. ‘The ability to transfer key properties of one particle to another without using any physical link has until now only been achieved with laser light…”We are able to teleport in a deliberate way –…
