Free iPhone Unlock released – saucy hack puts Apple in a stew…

Well it took a few months, but finally you can unlock your iPhone for free using a free software kit developed by some rather clever hackers from across the world. And here’s some instructions for you. You may also need the iBrickr utility. Couch potatoes should probably lean back, grab a pack of Pringles and wait for a full blown Windows/Mac installer, and if you’re in Europe wait for an iPhone to arrive too. Probably. This has been a public service…

Phonevite. ‘Broadcast your voice’. VoIP meets Web 2.0 meets megaphone. Use it to broadcast announcements, invitations, reminders and other stuff to lots of people via the telephone. The whole thing centres around a slick administration panel on the Web site, through which you organise your address and groups list, as well as view responses to your broadcast etc. Record your message – using either your phone or a special IE browser recording plugin – and then either schedule it for a…

Your DNA on a stick – getting up close and personal with your body

23andMe is a new biotechnology company funded inter alia via Esther Dyson, which aims to give everyone a chance to read their own DNA. The company won’t uncover the whole of your DNA sequence – that’s a bit £1 million complex – but they’ll scan 23 ‘paired volumes’, which apparently is enough to reveal facts about your ancestry, inherited traits and stuff. Eventually the founders hope that the service will let us take advantage of ‘personalized medicine’ which is tailored to our biological…

I-Sobot – the world’s smallest fully functioning robot?

Apparently Tomy’s I-SOBOT  (no not Tony’s, his is bigger) is the world’s smallest fully functioning robot. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t mean ‘functioning’ as in a ‘take me to your leader’ kind of way. More like a ‘17 servo motors and gyro-sensor’ thing. Anyhoo, it’s six inches tall, follows your voice commands and can play air guitar which may or may not be worth $299.99 to you. Here’s a couple of nice videos to keep you amused for a second…

Portable USB Turntable – convert your old vinyl to MP3 in the park…

This ‘ere Portable USB Turntable is a bit of a rum affair. Apparently there’s a group of folks what have a need to convert their classic vinyl albums into MP3 tracks while pottering about in the garden. No really. Maybe there’s a latent demand in people to record in strange places, you know, to give their sounds an airing so to speak. We’re a tad confused. But hey, whatever floats your greenhouse. £89.95 ($180.10 – man is that dollar hurtin’!)  Converting old discs is a doddle. Simply…

EPOS Wireless Digital Pen Mouse – handwriting capture and computer control in one slim device

The new EPOS Wireless Digital Pen Mouse offers handwriting capture as well as full mouse control in one. Draw, sketch, click drag drop. You get the picture. The good news is you don’t need a special pad or paper in order to capture your signature or other works of art. However I’m pretty sure that I’d hate reverting to a basic two button mouse, no matter how exotic. Of course your mileage may vary. Available later this year in OEM versions for around…

Blackbox Bluetooth Speaker – dark, sensuous and rich, and that’s just the packaging…

OK, so we’re really bored with wireless audio speaker thingies by now. But that said, let’s tarry a while and enjoy the minimalism of the Blackbox from Gear4. Black, cherry red LEDs, elegant. 24W from twin speakers, Bluetooth enabled to accept audio from your mobile phone handset and touchscreen controls. £99.99. There’s a Blackbox Mini version at £49.99 too.  It features a hidden LED display that comes to life with your tunes and touch screen controls, so that nothing detracts from…

Inside the world’s biggest plane – Airbus A380 glamour shots

These images from inside the new Airbus A380 550 seater aircraft are just a little unnerving methinks. Why? Well take a look at all those LCD screens for a start. There must be a dozen of them littered around the place. I just hope they keep a damp cloth on hand in case of any nasty spills. And let’s not look too long at the PC joystick masquerading as a ‘proper’ controller either. Is that a red missile launch button I spy?…

Creation Station – home video fun with software and a green screen

The Creation Station toy kit promises to deliver a tidal wave of low resolution, squirm inducing kid’s home video nonsense to the Web before you can say Steve Spielberg Sucks. The box comes complete with a green screen, compositing software and a VGA res camera with tripod. The kicker is the automatic YouTube upload, which sends shivers up the spine immediately. As does the TV ad previewed on the site. This does not bode well for the future of Internet video, peeps. Priced from…

Covert Keylogger Keyboard – spy on your mates in style

This one off Microsoft Natural Keyboard with Keylogger comes with a nasty little surprise built in. Yep, a key press recording device with 2 MB of storage (enough to record up to 2 million keystrokes or several day’s worth of sneaky, slimy spying). Give it to your parents, your best friend or local politician as a birthday present and see what pops up when you sneak back to their place to access the recorded data. Yuck! £215.00.  This keyboard is a one-off, and so once it is sold,…

Wireless Speaker – sounds good, looks strange, seems versatile

This Wireless Outdoor/Indoor Speaker looks rather audacious, doncha think? What makes it even more unusual is the fact that it comes with two bases, so you can either sit it on the floor or spike it into the grass or ground. Rechargeable internal battery gives up to 8 hours sound after which it’s the mains plug or 5 AA batteries. Versatile little puppy, isn’t it? £50.00.  It has an impressive 230ft range (70m) and comes with two bases depending on…

Become Invisible and walk among crowds unseen – next up, flying saucer pie

Learn the secret of how to become invisible. This eBay auction item promises to reveal the methodology as ‘used by the CIA and foreign intelligence agencies.’ Wow. I’m hooked, sign me up. And where’s that bridge you’re selling? To be used for ‘moral purposes’ ONLY!  This isn’t new… far from it. A fantastic rumor has been whispered throughout the generations and since the beginning of time: super-elite societies knew how to become totally invisible & walk unseen among people. They…

Unusual Hotels of the World – weird stopovers on the journey of life

Unusual Hotels of the World. A great resource if you’re looking for something a little different to spice up your vacations, like the Woodpecker Hotel featured in the tree above. Hotels are rated by the ‘wow’ factor and the site is chock full of information about facilities, user ratings, offers and tariffs. There’s a newsletter and the design of the site is top notch (although double clicking on a link is so 1990s, guys). Definitely worth a bookmark.  Unusual Hotels of the…
