Lithium-Sulphur Batteries – charge your phone once a week

Battery life is the bane of all modern technologies. Doesn’t matter how awesome something is, if the battery doesn’t last long enough, it’s functionally worthless. This is true for our phones, cars and renewable energy options. A new type of lithium-sulphur battery may change all of this though.

The new battery is functionally very similar to the standard lithium-ion battery that rules all of our lives except that it lasts five times longer. To put it into practical terms, if you had one of these in your phone it could stay charged up for up to five days. Imagine only having to plug your phone in once or twice a week.

Sulphur is really cheap and abundant so this would also drive down the price of electric cars and renewable energy storage. Both great things. The flip side is the ethical issue with these batteries remain. The components are rarer and the conditions in which they are gathered are far less than ideal. These batteries could be a solution to our energy issues but we cannot ignore the human toll of creating them.
