Ships is an awesome looking free ship simulation game which works with Google Earth. If you’ve ever wanted to captain the Queen Mary liner or slink about in a scruffy freighter, this is your chance. Of course much of the time it can get lonely at sea, so make lots of sandwiches for transatlantic runs. Most fabulous.  In this ship simulation program you get to be the helmsman of your own fleet of ships. “Ships” will take you past worlds…

Google Street View Trike – the awesomest high tech low tech solution ever

This Google Street View Trike is designed so the company can grab images from off-road footpaths and other inaccessible terrain in Europe for the Google maps application. First deployment will be Italy and then the UK. It is just wonderful what those guys come up with, although we’re feeling just a tad sorry for the poor geek dude who has to pedal the rig around the hedgerows. We’re assuming there’s electric pedal assist buried in there somewhere?  The so-called Google Trike, which…

Wow, Google has just updated its search results page and it’s a doozy. Just click on the ‘Show options..’ button at the top of your search results and you’ll get a an awesome list of subordinate criteria. What makes it v. cool is the excellent value of the filters, e.g. video, forums, reviews, time, images and even a very visual search Wonder Wheel option. Wow. Try it, it looks like an excellent addition to the page, and something I’ll be using…a…

Gruber Assist – the invisible electric bike retrofit

The Gruber Assist kit is a very cool electrical motor retrofit for standard bicycles which gives pedal assist power from an invisible drive train. The clever bit is to embed the 22 inch long motor and drive assembly into the frame by making it tubular, so instead of having to replace wheels, you just have to replace a seat pillar (video). The kit offers 200W of power, weighs a trifling 900 g and comes with a saddlebag housed NiMH battery (or LiION option)…

Nano Reisen – take a journey through the nano world

Nano Reisen is a fascinating interactive Flash trip into the nano world. The journey takes you through how light is created in LEDs, the structure of computer components and all the way down the biological rabbit hole through DNA and into the nucleus of a carbon atom. There’s a lot to digest and it’s very detailed but do yourself a favour and have look, you’ll need 10-15 minutes to do it some justice. It’s a German site, but multi-lingual with…

Up till now it’s been impossible to do this easily and fast, but this program changes all that. You can also set up a…

2008 TC3 – the surprise meteorite

Cast your mind back to the 7th of October, 2008. Anything special happen that day? Nope, me neither. Well as it happens, that was the day an asteroid became a meteorite and crashed to earth. So what, you say, meteorites hit the Earth all time. Well this one was a little different because astronomers knew it was going to hit us. The asteroid was called 2008 TC3, a 4 metre near-earth object that was first spotted by SpaceGuard orbiting just…

IdeaPaint – super cool paint turns any smooth wall into a whiteboard

IdeaPaint is a single coat roller applied paint that turns any smooth surface into a dry-erase writing surface. How cool is that? Of course it’s great for idea merchants, but maybe not so hot for conscientious (read fussy) homemakers who may blanche at the idea of a living room full of little Jimmy’s scribbles. But at work it’s gotta be awesome for team brainstorming rooms. It costs $199.50 for a 50 sq foot kit.  Use IdeaPaint to transform office walls,…
