Files Over Miles – browser to browser file sharing

Files Over Miles seems to be the easiest file sharing site ever. Choose the file to share and upload it. Files Over Miles will then store the file in the machine’s RAM and generate a unique URL. Email that URL to the recipient and when they click it the file will be slurped to their machine. It uses AES128 so it’s secure and it doesn’t go through any other servers. There are a couple of limitations and both the sender…

Find free images fast – Creative Commons and Public Domain image filters hit the search engines at last

Google is in the process of officially introducing a useful filter to its image search in order to help folk find free Creative Commons and public domain images. It’s a fine idea and well overdue, so a round of applause please. …and look, Yahoo! Image Search already offers the same for Flickr image searches…so double cheer.  Finding a great image online elicits a little thrill, but it can be tricky – if you’re looking for a pic to pop into a…

Indaba Music – browser based online music mixing and collaboration

Indaba Music is a online community where musicians can mingle, upload their music, share ideas and even collaborate as if they were together in a recording studio. The heart of the system is the Digital Audio Workstation which allows you mix and edit music in your browser from any computer. It’s completely browser based so there’s no software to download but data is cached locally so you don’t need to continually download stuff you’ve edited. [Click to enlarge] You can…

Sofortbild – Control your Nikon with your Mac

Sofortbild is a fantastic little piece of software that allows you to control your Nikon digital SLR by connecting it to a Mac via USB or over a wired or wireless LAN. You can adjust most of the settings you would normally be able to adjust on the camera by using the software. Stuff like aperture, metering mode, exposure compensation, bracketing, white balance, ISO etc. When you’re all set up, snap a pic and it will appear on your Mac’s…

Propane Powered Lawn Trimmer – clean air lawn tech

Lehr make a range of propane-powered garden equipment including this Propane-Powered Lawn Trimmer. Propane is brilliant as a fuel as it burns much cleaner than petrol, and propane engines are simpler and lighter. The Lehr Trimmer runs on propane from an ordinary 16 oz gas bottle which you can pick up from any hardware store. Just screw it in and away you go, no mess, no choke, no priming. The engine is a 25cc four-stroke so it’s quieter than a…

Code X Yacht – Formula 1 powered ultra boat built by the Cylons

This amazing look machine is the Code X Yacht, an ultra performance hybrid sports boat. She’s powered by a pair of Ilmor Marine 710 horsepower V10 Formula 1 engines that push along at 90 knots (167 km/h). There is also a bank of solar cells to charge the lithium ion batteries and run the electric motors. Running on electrons will only get you 9 knots but it does mean you can slip out silently while basking in the sun. The…

Pop’s ‘Stache – remain incognito while sipping your pop

Are you sick of people picking up your bottle and drinking from it? It’ll never happen again with one of these Pop’s ‘Stache, bottle identifiers. Choose your personality and clip it on over the neck of the bottle to see it safe from erroneous consumption. At the moment the Pop’s Stache is a collaborative project by Andrew Reeves, Shane Blomberg and John Healy, three guys from the US. Not sure if or when the Pop’s ‘Staches are going on sale…

Nokia Engage ad – some real viral style advertising

Sometimes you have to tip your head, doff your cap and offer a small patter of applause at the marketing suits for coming up with something that works. Such is the case with the new Nokia Engage ad, featuring lots of crowd sourced stop-go animation, and a fab live computer bricks game as well. It clearly cost a bundle, is mucho fun and deserves to go hugely viral, which it will. Tags: nokia+engage, viral+advert, game

Diamond DA42 – Super stylish twin engine, four seater plane

Aircraft aren’t usual Ferret-faire but I couldn’t go past the Diamond DA42. It’s a gorgeous mix of the WWII P38 Lighting blended with state-of-the aerodynamics and a brilliant cockpit. The DA42 is truly an enthusiast’s plane with options for everything from the engines to the pin striping. Choose between turbo-diesel engines or traditional avgas version depending on whether you want range, power or both. Then you can go to town on accessories. No iPod docks or entertainment systems though, you…

Sorry I’m Late – very cool short film

Sorry I’m Late, is a very cute short stop-motion film shot entirely with a digital SLR and real actors. It’s only 3 minutes long so click through and have a look. There’s a behind-the-scenes look as well. Very cute. Instead of moving the camera for each frame we thought we’d make a fake floor out of pillows and other random stuff we could find at home. If we moved the floor for each frame it would give the illusion as…

Just a quick note to y’all to say take another look at Posterous. We covered it in January when it launched, and my how it’s grown. Color Hunter – complementary colour generator

Color Hunter generates a palette of colours from an uploaded photo or via a photo URL. It’s a bit like Adobe Kuler, but instead of creating the colour palette yourself, Color Hunter does all the hard work. Leaving you with a palette and colour codes for use on websites, presentations, artwork or whatever. You can also search Color Hunter via tags, say if you wanted a palette for a sunny sandy beach or the Australian Outback or even deepest, darkest…

Doctor uses power drill to save boy’s life

The guys and gals over at Gizmodo are running a special at the moment on When Machines Go Bad. Well, this is a story of how the wrong machines can do good in the right hands. Last Friday the 15th, 13 year old Nicholas Rossi from Maryborough (170 km North West of Melbourne, Australia) fell off his bike and banged his head. He was knocked out for 30 seconds but got up and seemed fined. His mum (a nurse) decided…
