CycleKarting – vintage go-karts restore fun to motor sport

CycleKarting is a new invite-only participant sport which looks awesome. Take a cut down framework of no more than 200 lbs in weight, throw in a tiny 6.5 hp motor, clad it all in a vintage racing car theme and dash around dirt roads to your heart’s content. It’s all very DIY (mandatory) and no boy racer types allowed. Most excellent way to return to the fun of motor sport without all the nasty commercial rubbish. Amazing. More here. [Via]…

Pool Angel – anti-drowning device saves lives at home

Pool Angel is a new anti-drowning system that has been developed for domestic swimming pools. After installation the alarm will sound within 3 to 7 seconds if it detects a body of around 8kgs falling into the water. There is a secondary receiver which will then sound inside the house within a couple of seconds. Clever tech.  How does Pool Angel work? When a child or pet is falling into a home swimming pool, Pool Angel will sound alarm in seconds….

Acoustibuds – hands on with this brilliant earphone revolution

We featured Acoustibuds on the Ferret a few weeks back, and the PR company offered to send me a set to try out properly. To refresh your memory, they are adapters which you slide over your existing earphone ends to improve the sound and comfort. So, do they work? Well let’s put it this way, if you’ve been fretting about the random sound quality, uncomfortable fit and constant adjustment needed with your current set of earphones, run…don’t walk…to your nearest…

John Alvin – incredible movie poster artist

You probably haven’t heard of John Alvin, but if you’ve seen a movie in the last 35 years then you’ve seen his work. John was a movie poster artist and was responsible for some of the most memorable movie posters ever created. Sadly he passed away early last year but has left behind an incredible legacy of artworks to enjoy. Posters for everything from Bladerunner to The Goonies, from Blazing Saddles to Empire of the Sun. A remarkable talent. Considered…

Eliica lives – the ultimate electric beast car

Way back in 2003, before some of you were even born, we featured the mind-boggling conceptual electric car called Eliica, brainchild of a mammoth $4m research project from Keio University in Japan. We’re now happy to report that the Eliica lives. We’re talking 8 wheel electric drive, 160 km/h top speed and absolutely bristling with hi-tech goodies. Just perfect for a credit crunch environment. Video (in Japanese). No word on production dates (hah!) though. Tags: ecological, electric+car, eliica

Anti Theft Bike and Car Device – stick some instant un-lovely on your precious stuff

Dominic Wilcox’s Anti-Theft Bike/Car Device is a genius idea. Clear stickers which contain rust and scratch marks, which you place on your property to make it look too old to be worth stealing. Not sure how it would work on a 2009 Porsche, but on a bicycle or aging car, pretty good? Of course there’s people who’ll steal the rust off your tractor for a sweetie, so it won’t always work. Lovely idea though, and worth a punt at £3.99…

Learn Cyrillic alphabet in 5 minutes – brilliant expose of those strange letters

This utterly brilliant Read the Cyrillic Alphabet in 5 Minutes post manages to teach the basics of this alphabet in a few paragraphs, and it’s actually not that hard to learn. I’m gobsmacked, having struggled mightily with trying and failing to understand Moscow road and tube signs back in the day. It’s actually not all gobbledygook, fantastic. Now if someone could do this for Japanese and/or Chinese we’d be set.  It used to be that when I saw Russian words like this–…

It’s powered by Silverlight – which for the sneering classes, is starting to power some pretty cool stuff like the video on demand services of Sky – which works really well as a streaming technology! How cool is this…? Well try a zoom in from a space view of earth… …to a view of the East Village in New York. Totally amazing. There are some great tours…

YouTube Edu – education gets a fab new home

YouTube Edu is proof that there’s no part of the world that the Web can’t touch in a significant way. It looks as though the Google machine has gathered together a bunch of educational video material to make a portal for online learning which could revolutionise the genre. C’mon, to have a chance of watching Professor Leonard Susskind of Standford University expound on Einstein’s general theory of relativity? Priceless. Oh and the time limits have been removed, so we’re talking full…
