DoodleBuzz – typographic news explorer

DoodleBuzz is a new take on displaying news articles from around the internets. Choose a news item you wish to search for and make a squiggle to display relevant articles. You can then drag out the more interesting articles, explore them in detail, see where else they link to or click through to the story itself. Words don’t really do DoodleBuzz justice so go and have a play, it’s very cool and a great way to discover new angles on…

DNA Mini Portraits – because you’re unique, just like everyone else

A DNA Mini Portrait is a great way to tell the world “it doesn’t suck to be me”. Each portrait is a one-off picture of your DNA, unless you happen to have an identical twin, and is elegantly framed so you can show it off proudly. Simply contact DNA 11 and they’ll send you a DNA collection kit. Wipe the swab around the inside of your mouth, post it back to them with $169US and your DNA portrait will be…

Spoonflower – design your own fabric

Spoonflower is a new webservice (is that a new word?) and etsy community that allows you to design your own patterned fabric and have it printed and delivered. It’s in beta mode at the moment and not everything’s been ironed out but it is up and running. The idea is you design a swatch or a repeating pattern that is printed across the fabric. You choose how much you want printed and they make it and ship it out to…

1930 Portable Gramophone – a lovingly restored iPod of yesteryear

This 1930 Portable Gramophone is the real McCoy all right. Actually it’s an HMV Model 101, part of a small collection of such classic sound machines which have been restored for sale on the open market. It may well sound like cat claws being dragged across a school blackboard on a hot day, but it’s got oodles of style nevertheless. And look, is that a small space in which my vinyl recordings can nestle comfortably? Oh bliss! Prices start at around £350.00.  We…

Write or Die – keep writing or suffer the consequences

Write or Die is an absolutely brilliant online application which is designed to help writers reach their deadlines, no fuss no muss. It basically combines a targeted timer and word count editor with a set of predetermined penalties for non compliance. You need to write 500 words in a morning for that deadline? Enter in the figures, and click Write. The application opens up an editing box and as long as you continue writing, no problem. Sit back for any time though,…

Mega murals – Eric Grohe’s awesome trompe l’oeil murals give life to drabness

Eric Grohe paints walls. And how. He can transform a dull, lifeless slab of concrete or brick into something amazing (check out the incredible Projects page). Apparently the German paint he uses is super tough and long lasting, which is probably a very good idea. I have a friend, Jeff Raum, who does similar stuff in LA, and I’m always amazed by the capacity of artists of this type to create fine detail on such a large canvas. Well worth a browse if…

Alchemist Aston Martin DB7 – 24 carat gold, platinum leaf and 7 diamonds in the bodywork. Recession what recession?

The Alchemist Aston Martin DB7 is a 24 carat gold and platinum leafed supercar with seven diamonds studded into the bodywork. Good luck parking the thing safely outside your local shoe shop. Oh but we forget, people with this amount of money don’t do their own shopping do they? Tsk! Silly us. Recession, what recession, James? Oh and the company plate laptops too, just in case you were interested.  Alchemist is a company specializing in covering or decorating cars and…

Design Your Own Headphones – you design it, they’ll make it…maybe

The Music Almighty Headset Competition from Nokia is an all-comers ‘design your own headphones’ challenge, where all designs go up on a gallery to be voted on. The winning five designs will actually be made and displayed in the company’s retail stores, after which you get to keep them. This is either a very brave or foolhardy venture, time will tell. Pop along and have your own go at the prize. My rather mundane effort –  We are giving you the…

The Human Calendar – make your day the people way…

Heh, the Human Clock guy is back, this time with the Human Calendar which is, yep you’ve guessed it, a calendar made out of real people. True to form, it’s fun, lively and entertaining. Enjoy!  All of the “models” are various homogeneous friends of mine who happened to find themselves near my garage between April-July 2007. Granted, most were lured with beer, food, lodging, or in one case…meat. Nearly everyone is from Portland, Oregon with the occasional person from Saipan…

Speak & Spell Emulator – relive your misspelt youth

The Speak & Spell emulator is a fan-created, flash-based emulator of the iconic Texas Instruments spelling tutor, created from the original sound files. Whilst not fully functional it’s sure to help you wile away a bit of time as you stroll down memory lane. Just don’t forget to turn your sound on. This emulator began in 2002, as a personal project I started with the single aim of improving my Flash Actionscript skills. As with any good personal project, you need…

Lala – digital music made easy

Lala is a new online music service which comes with some interestingly innovative features. It has a fast, easy to manage interface which lets you sample full tracks very quickly and more importantly add them to an online playlist locker for repeat listening. The service itself is subscription free, although you’ll pay for the music of course. The fascinating thing is the fact that they’re charging 10c per track, and if you want the downloaded MP3, you’ll pay an extra…
