Pool Protector Alarm – instant notification when something falls into your pool

The Pool Protector Alarm alerts you if someone or something falls into your pool when you’re not looking. Kids, animals, the occasional drunk burglar. That sort of thing. It triggers a pulsating alarm and a signal on a remote receiver which operates up to 200 feet away. The 9V battery lasts a year in normal use and you can set a sleep mode for when you want to go swimming without ear ache. $139.95.  The POOLPROTECTOR pool alarm is the…

Swami Robot – advanced AI, animatronic latex face, clever conversation. Hah, who needs Uncle Joe now?

Swami Conversational Robot. First the bad news. You’ll need $75,000.00. Now the good news. Um…there isn’t any. OK, there is a bit. It’s a pretty advanced animatronic robot head which can recognize family members, carry on conversations and even answer questions (as long as they’re pretty basic we assume). Runs off a laptop and uses 30 robotic motors to do all the clever stuff. But did we mention the price? Ahh, OK then.  The OMG factor on this dude is off…

Cellecast – radio shows delivered to your cell phone for free

Cellecast. They’re calling it cell phone radio on demand. Just dial a number – 1 360 335 6000 – from anywhere and you’ll be able to listen to your own personal playlist of radio stations on your phone. You can pause, rewind and fast forward and even interact via text message with some shows if they have the TalkBack feature enabled. There’s not a lot of content available at the moment on the site, but since it’s advertising sponsored the…

Clutter Me – reinventing web page creation the Netvibes way…

ClutterMe. Well it had to happen. Take a tiny dash of the Netvibes super simple page generation tech, throw in some Geocities home page sauce, shake it all up in a new Web 2.0 kind of way and you’ve got a homepage creator which is pretty darn interesting. You can embed photos, video, text, whatever you want. Drag it around, change it. It’s all private unless you want it otherwise and comes with personalised login URL etc etc. I have…

Gigapan Robotic Camera Mount – the amazing panoramic photo machine

The good folk at Carnegie Mellon University, NASA, and Charmed Labs have announced the public beta of the new Gigapan Robotic Camera Mount. The idea is that you slot your digital camera into the mount, press a few buttons to set the dimensions of your panorama and the robot turns and presses the shutter release all in one fluid motion to deliver a highly detailed set of shots which can be combined together into a gigapixel panorama with special software. The…

Zero Electric Motorbike – a throttle, a battery pack and a silent swoosh

Zero Electric Motorbike. Wonders will never cease, an electric motorbike that looks half decent, doesn’t cost the earth, gives 300 miles per gallon equivalent and doesn’t cost a huge amount to maintain. Whatever next? I love the dirt track race video – with silent bikes. $6,900.00.  Powered by Zero’s patent-pending ZPower lithium ion power packs, Zero electric motorcycles can go about 40 miles between charges. Power packs can be changed on the fly. Full recharging takes about two hours, and can…

Furutech DFV-1 LP Flattener – old warped vinyl records made new…ish

Furutech DFV-1 LP Flattener. Slot in your vinyl LP, clamp together, switch on heater function and presto, no more warped album. No it won’t get rid of those nasty scratches, waddya want, blood? Anyway, we applaud the tech but feel compelled to ask, ‘Where were you when we had that massive Bee Gees collection back in the day, people?’ Followed up by – ‘$1,480.00? You’re kidding, right?’ [via Crunchgear]  Every vinyl enthusiast has records in their collection, or come across LPs they’d love to own, but were just…

iPhotoMeasure – measure anything in a photo using your digital camera or phone cam

iPhotoMEASURE is a $99.99 software program that lets you measure anything in photos you take with your digital camera. You place a small 7.5” square (DigiTarget) in the shot when taking your photo which the program then uses to calculate the measurements you want. If it works as advertised, it could be one of the single most useful photo tools ever. The company is marketing it as a professional product for garden designers, builders and anyone who has to deliver quotes…

Smart Furniture – when good sofas go bad…

This collection of Smart Furniture projects and products is rather cool. Some of the stuff is also a little scary, like the automated recording stool featured above and the toilet that knows more about you than your doctor. They have, however, missed out on the table that clears itself, which is a shame.  This stool is actually a small robot that follows people around while recording their conversations. It then moves around to other people in the room and plays back the…

Thummer – mini music machine emphasises expressive effects

Thummer. Now here’s an interesting little music synthesizer which is based around a button and joystick motif. Press buttons and wiggle the joysticks to give the sounds more emotional impact (i.e. bendy). The videos show off some of the potential nicely, although it’s clear that the sound samples will need to be top class to make this instrument happen properly. They’re looking for investment apparently, so nothing available for sale just yet.  A musician playing a piano-style keyboard controller can…

Wind Up Lamp – clever power generator, timer and lamp combo is perfect for sleepy-time

This Wind Up Lamp is a superb concept idea from Yuko Taguchi. Just turn the key to start up a timer and tiny power generator which will keep the lamp lit while you nod off, read or finish your knitting. Once the key winds down the light goes off. Nice eh? No more falling asleep with the bedside light still consuming wattage. This really should go into production.  This is for people who can’t sleep without the light. Also, people who…

Kitewing Rage 55+ – windsurfing for landlubbers

Kitewing Rage 55+. This new ‘wing’ is a pretty scary piece of kit. Just 195cm in transport mode, it unfurls to a big 5 sq mtr handheld carbon composite kite which you can use with your skis, skates, snow or skateboards etc. Clip on the groovy MP3 playa, super shades and a bit of sunscreen, and career along the land route of your choice. Check out this video to get an idea of the potential for self damage you can expect with…

Electrolux Wascator – the environmentally green dry cleaning machine

The Electrolux Wascator may look ugly, but you’ll learn to love it muchly once it starts dry cleaning your clothes using harmless carbon dioxide instead of all those nasty smelly, environment destroying chemicals. See, you’re feeling better about it already, aren’t you?  The Electrolux Group is presenting an environmentally sage dry cleaning machine. Developed by Electrolux subsidiary Wascator, the machine replaces these potentially damaging chemicals with carbon dioxide. At around 50-60 times normal atmospheric pressure, carbon dioxide liquefies[semicolon] when liquid,…

Veodia – the live TV studio in your browser

Veodia is a new video broadcast service which is a direct competitor to Neokast in that it lets you stream live videocasts from your PC webcam or a DV camera. Unlike Neokast, however, this product supports Firefox out of the box, which is a very good thing. It also streams to 3G mobile phones, AppleTV and Video iPods as well as PCs running Quicktime 7.0. The interface is simple but very usable, and it’s easy to get up and running with…

The Bike Dispenser – bicycle vending machines reach Europe at last

The Bike Dispenser…er…dispenses bicycles. On demand. The service is only at pilot stage at the moment in Eindhoven in the Netherlands, but it sounds perfect for most places if the concept works out. You pay a subscription to obtain a smartcard and PIN number and use that to rent a bike at any of the vending machines you find (the plan is to site them at places like railway stations, park and ride etc). Just stick your card in the…
