Rebtel – cheap and free international mobile phone calls

Rebtel. Interesting free/cheap international mobile phone call service which doesn’t use phone cards, download or computers. You register your number and a friend’s mobile number. You get a local number to call which routes through to your friend’s handset. Result, cheap call. To get free calls you do a call and call-back process. Looks good.   * Cheap international calls from your mobile phone * No computers, downloads, or phone cards necessary * Just dial and talk internationally at local rates!…

Um…the Nokia N95 has an accelerometer inside??

Apparently the Nokia N95 has an accelerometer inside. You know, just like those fancy pants iPhone thingies. This is pretty freaky because it means that you’re soon going to see a bunch of Symbian type applications which use auto-rotate and stuff like that. If you’ve got an N95 download Moving Ball and try it out yourself. You have to ask why Nokia keeps doing this kind of thing. Remember the hidden mic in the N770 and the FM radio that…

Nokia perfects the clicky tactile touchscreen – iPhone gnashes teeth, swears revenge

It’s taken them 10 years but Nokia boffins have finally perfected a ‘touch feedback’ touchscreen. Don’t be fooled by simple vibrational imitations folks, this is the real McCoy – you press a key on the screen, and it clicks under your finger with exactly the same sort of fingertip feedback as if you’d pressed a conventional keyboard key. Roope Takala, Senior Program Manager at Nokia’s research labs gave me a demo of the technology in Finland the other day on a…

Vivendi Games Mobile – free classic Sierra games available for your mobile phone

Vivendi Games Mobile looks to be making a push to deliver classic Sierra game titles reworked for your mobile phone. The idea is to supply the games free in exchange for some advertising time on your handset. It’s an attractive proposition, especially when you consider the quality of the games back catalogue that’s involved (Crash Bandicoot, Leisure Suit Larry, SWAT…etc). Unfortunately it’s all ‘over the air’ via your mobile operator at the moment, but that’s inevitably going to change sooner…

The No-Cut Dual SIM Card Socket – run 2 SIMs in your phone simultaneously

The No-Cut Dual SIM Socket lets you run two SIM cards in your mobile phone at the same time. With the old types, you had to cut your SIM card up in order to insert them, but this model lets you insert your whole card which is pretty neat. From the installation instructions it looks as though you put one SIM under and one over the top of the battery to fit the thing in. It seems to be compatible with a fair amount of handsets,…

IsatPhone Dual Satellite Phone – the world’s cheapest satellite phone

The new IsatPhone from Inmarsat is being marketed as the world’s cheapest satellite phone. The feature set looks pretty good too. It’s pocket sized, has 2 hours 40 minutes talk time, features dual mode GSM 900 and satellite reception and gives sat coverage in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Pretty useful for jungle dwellers and the like eh? Priced at $775.00 (£400.00).  IsatPhone is one of the most compact, robust and lightweight satellite phones on the market. It is…

Nimbuzz – super slick do-it-all chat and VoIP program for mobile and PC

Nimbuzz. I’ve been playing around with this new Dutch chat and VoIP freeware for a few days now and it’s pretty cool. What’s extra special goody gumdrops neat is a) the fact that it’s a Java app, so runs on just about every handset out there and b) the wide range of services it copes with. You can chat with your Skype, MSN, Yahoo!, AIM and Google Talk buddies on your mobile phone and make voice calls to MSN and Google…

Cellecast – radio shows delivered to your cell phone for free

Cellecast. They’re calling it cell phone radio on demand. Just dial a number – 1 360 335 6000 – from anywhere and you’ll be able to listen to your own personal playlist of radio stations on your phone. You can pause, rewind and fast forward and even interact via text message with some shows if they have the TalkBack feature enabled. There’s not a lot of content available at the moment on the site, but since it’s advertising sponsored the…

BT FON – hold the phone, a major telco goes free global community WiFi?

Whoa, this is astonishing news. British Telecom, the behemoth dinosaur telco of the UK, has just announced a mega deal with FON, the free community WiFi service. The upshot of the whole shebang is that BT’s 3 million broadband customers will be encouraged – say that again? – to share WiFi and their home broadband connection between themselves wherever they are. Not only that, but BT has invested in FON. They’re calling it the world’s largest WiFi community. Unbe-chuffin’-lievable. Hold…

Gizmodo says don’t buy the iPhone – we ask WWBS?

Brian at Gizmodo has put up a post which, carefully and with reluctance, outlines the reasons why Gizmodo no longer recommends the iPhone. It’s worth reading, as is the response from my friend Jack at the Guardian. I agree with the sentiments of both pundits, although I do wonder what would have happened had Microsoft pulled a stunt like this, i.e. crippling a product in such a deliberate and malicious way? How has Apple got away with this so easily? Is…

MobileView CCTV Program – control your security cameras from your phone

MobileViewer is a Java program which gives control of up to 16 CCTV cameras from a GPRS enabled mobile phone. Yep, not only do have to suffer a shed load of cameras watching our every move, but now we’re going to get people doing the surveillance from their bath, pub, holiday home or desert palace. How perfectly beastly. And if you stick one of their £99.00 ConnectVu webcams on the other end, you’ll be able to snoop on someone in the…

Backup Pal – one button backup for your cell phone data

Backup Pal is a one button mobile phone backup device which archives contact information from SIM and handset memory as needed. World’s first? Hmm…probably not. Anyhoo, it won’t backup SMS messages, ringtones or any of those other annoying customisations that you insist on polluting your handset with, which is a shame, eh? There are plans for a future model to do this stuff, as well as cope with multiple handsets. The thing comes with a selection of connectors to cope with…
