Light Pollution – it’s still going strong

More work needs to be done to lessen light pollution says the Campaign to Protect Rural England. Over the 12 years since the issue was first raided, it hasn’t improved which is a shame not just for the night sky but the well being of nocturnal animals and even our own health.

Studies show that constant bright light can have an effect on our sleeping patterns and lead to poorer health outcomes which is a drag. Experiencing times of darkness is good for us, and we need it to help settle our bodies for sleep. Nocturnal animal also take a hit as the light does the same for their rhythms.

We can all help buy turning out outdoor lights for starters and petitioning our local areas for more “dark friendly” outdoor lighting. Safety is key of course but there are places and areas where it would be safe to turn them off. More needs to be done in that sector but being aware of the issue is the first step.
