Light pollution is real. In urban areas it is common to see streetlights, building lights, etc wherever you go, there’s hardly any night at all! Which is a major problem for nocturnal animals. It may seem the only creatures who are affected by our lights are bugs but there’s so much more. This handy inforgraphic points out some of the major issues with light pollution.
Light pollution is artificial nighttime light. A porch light on a farm house isn’t a huge issue but when it comes to urban spaces, there’s so much that it’s confusing animals and causing some creatures real harm which is bad news for everyone.
Unfortunately light pollution is pretty far outside of most of our control and the lights causing the issues exist for good reasons. Not to fear though, scientists are beginning to work with designers and city planners on better, safer options.
