Something Pop – cool free mathematical tool helps you make optimum decisions in life

We all have to make decisions, right? Some are important (like does this shirt make me look fat?) and some not so much. After all who cares if you run for president. Really. And we each have our own way of making the big choices in life, using a pin, a lucky Shamrock, asking the lady down the post office. counter. But now there’s a pretty cool alternative.

Is the independent web starting to fight back against the giant corporate networks?

We stumbled across an interesting article by Matthew Ingram the other day, lamenting the loss of the old ‘blogosphere‘. What made it especially poignant was the fact that it was posted on one of the prime examples of the new corporatized ‘blog’, Gigaom, which many years ago transitioned from small and friendly to big and rich. It’s progress.

Sidekick – stripping away the dreams of Kickstarter, one failing minute at a time

For those of you with a passion for people watching there are few more poignant examples of the human condition than seeing dreams and aspirations come and go. And nowhere can you find that in more stark relief at the moment, than on the pages of Kickstarter, the online crowdfunding service.

Videvo – free stock video footage and motion graphics [Freeware]

If you’re one of those folks who’ve been bitten by the video bug, you’ll know all about the joys and frustrations of getting your work done. Apart from having to learn all the ropes, it’s also tricky putting together professional looking productions without having the money to spend on the nice little extras. One extra which is particularly valuable is the use of B-roll, or stock footage, which can really add something to your video.

The Heartbleed Security Fiasco – 4 Steps Every User Can Take Now To Salvage Some Security

In case you missed it, there’s been a massive flaw found in one of the most widely used technologies on the Web, called OpenSSL. The problem is that this encryption, which is supposed to protect our passwords and private details when we log in to website services like stores and banks, had a gaping hole in it, through which a villainous crew could have driven a 10 tonne truck and accompanying convoy in the right circumstances.

Peek – get a random user video review of your website done for free

One of the hard things about running your own website is getting any really objective feedback as to whether the design works as it should. Sure you can ask your mom, but chances are she won’t want to hurt your feelings if it’s really bad, and probably won’t be interested in giving you an in-depth overview anyway. But now there’s a free option available which works pretty well.

Webtrate – fed up with wasting time on the web? This will definitely cure the problem

The web’s great, but boy does it suck up time. How many times have you started your day with great intentions only to turn round and find that you’ve spent the whole morning watching videos of hula cats? Yeah we know how it goes. There are tools to help, but in general they’re too easy to switch off. Until now.

Freerice – help feed the hungry by playing games and learning stuff

Perceptive readers will notice that we have been running a water charity ad in our main header for a while now, which harks back to our original site when we had a permanent charity ad in prime position to help feed the hungry. So it’s nice to report on a new initiative to help the world’s hungry.

Our Tribute to 25 Years of The World Wide Web – 7 Sites Which Show Just How Amazing The Web Really Is

Twenty five years ago this month, Tim Berners-Lee, a computer scientist at CERN in Europe came up with a new way of storing and retrieving information using the then fledgling Internet network of computers. His idea of a ‘worldwideweb‘ [sic] took off slowly, but by the end of 1990 the first web site was up and running. Today there are estimated to be around 2.5 billion users of the system, with 1 billion of those based in Asia alone. One…
