The CityScape Project

What do you do if you’re a geek and you really don’t like the view from your window? Why replace it with a view you’ve created yourself of course. I suppose it’s cheaper than moving.[via catch.com]

Big Brother for a buck.

The images above are nothing out of the ordinary in today’s 21st century satellite happy world, except for the fact that they can be bought by anyone with the right amount of dough. DigitalGlobe sells images taken by its QuickBird satellite to all comers, with prices starting at $30.00 per square kilometre. The resolution from the 450 kilometre high satellite are quite sharp (you can see a foursome of golfers playing on one image) and are targeted at anyone from…

Ad Astra!

There’s a fair amount of chat going on about this laser powered paper plane, but for my money the really exciting laser flight work is focussing around the Lightcraft project. This is a rather cool endeavour which looks like it could lead to some seriously useful space travel technology. Maybe! Check out the videos of the test flights. Meanwhile here’s an interesting selection of earth orbit craft currently under investigation and/or development.

The Freecharge – not a wind up!

The Freecharge is a wind up mobile phone charger which lets you keep your handset topped up with a quick twirl of the wrist. Well OK, it’s more like a minute of cranking will give you five minutes chat, but still it looks to be cool technology, and very useful if you’re out and about a lot. It is out this month for around 60.00 and you will be able to get adapters for most of the popular phones within…

Now that’s a small computer

The Tigit eightythree – cute name guys – is a full blown x86 handheld computer. Yep, it can run Windows XP or Linux, has standard ports and is…er…small. It should cost around the same price as a laptop and the company is hoping to have models available on shelves by the end of the year.

Not for the squeamish

The Virtual Bypass Surgery site lets you conduct your very own heart operation right there on screen as a means of learning about the body. Informative it may be, but I couldn’t get past the first injection before I passed out.

“I’ll be back”

One for mechaphobes everywhere. A short video (Windows media) showing one of Sony’s new small robots getting to its feet after being pushed over. Spooky! [courtesy of everythingisnt]

How to get a-Head (ahem!)

Wimbledon may never be the same if tennis racket maker Head has its way. The company has developed a new racket called the iS18 ChipSystem which – according to this EE Times report – incorporates advanced piezoelectric technology to eliminate 50% of the vibrations and provide what Head calls ‘active counterforce’ during ball contact. I suppose this means that it helps them play better, eh? Sigh. Come back Rod Laver all is forgiven. [via slashdot]

2 Megapixel digicam on a keyring!

The Mustek gSmart Mini2 digital camera is small, very small. In fact it looks to be the smallest camera in the 2.1 million pixel resolution segment so far. Actually the 2.1 megapixel designation is wrong, because it only has a 1.3M pixel CMOS chip, but according to the specs on the site the software will interpolate up to 2.1 mpixel. The camera sports 16MB of memory and the Lithium Ion battery is recharged via the USB cable used for transferring…
