Sing it baby!

This I love! The WildTones Sing-Your-Own-Ringtone service has just been launched in the UK. Dial 0906 174 4556 in the UK, hum your choice of tune down the line and it will be translated as a ringtone and sent to you as an SMS message. Classic! Wonder how it copes with tone deaf users? Zoe the mail girl

I’m plunking Zoe in here for my own records really, since I’m just not that convinced that a searchable proxy email client like this has that much of a future. It just looks a little too much like overkill to me. Still worth a look if you’re interested in that sort of thang.

A cool set of videos showing an amazing ‘seeing’ robot hand which can follow movement and even shake hands properly. Spoooky! [via boingboing]

Ideas wanted

Got an idea? Tell it to the folks at Should Exist.org. You’ll get it peer reviewed – i.e. either it will be massacred or you’ll gain some kudos. I don’t unfortunately see any mention of money anywhere.

Civilisation comes to the smartphone

Uh oh! This could be very bad news. Civilisation has been ported to the Nokia 9210. Since this is widely regarded as one of the most addictive games in the world, alarm bells should start ringing now. [via ben]

Are you sitting comfortably?

Seat Guru is a great site for travellers who want to ensure as comfortable a ride as possible in one of those glorified tin cans we call aircraft. It features a listing of seat arrangements for planes in the fleets of the top five US carriers. Want to know which seat is wider and more comfortable, or which one is near the toilets before you book? Check here. Now if only the site would extend itself to transatlantic carriers!

Copyright vs the Supreme Court

This is a nice first hand report of the oral proceedings relating to the Eldred vs Ashcroft US Supreme Court case which is all about extension of copyright and its potential abuse. Unfortunately it doesn’t read well for those who were hoping that common sense would prevail and stop big companies from continually extending their copyright lock-downs.

Spyware smasher

Spy Bot Search & Destroy sounds like AdAware on steroids. It gets rid of spyware, diallers, trojans and hijackers. Haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but hope to soon.

Invisible chat

The InvisibleNet initiative promises to deliver secure, private (read annonymous) IRC and P2P services to one and all. I wonder if they will be a little more successful than Freenet? Talking of IRC, the xGoogle search engine for IRC looks to be a very clever idea. Mind you, many IRC discussions move so fast that by the time they’re found they’re probably gone.

Next gen DVD players on show

Toshiba has been proudly showing off a new machine that it is pushing as a replacement for the DVD player. The Advanced Optical Disk system uses 15 GB disks (instead of the current 4.7 GB of DVD) and uses a blue laser. Don’t hold your breath waiting for it to arrive though.
