SHPEGS – the open source renewable energy project

The SHPEGS Project. Stands for Solar Heat Pump Electrical Generation System. Basically they’re trying to build a photovoltaics system to store and use solar energy efficiently. The difference here is they’re doing it in the open, no patents, no lawyers, just an open dialogue. Love it.  This is a project to design and build a system that uses a combination of direct and indirect solar collection to generate electricity and store thermal energy in an economical, environmentally friendly, scalable, reliable,…

Tank Limo – you calling me a poser, mate?

The Tank Limo is kind of scary. OK, so it’s white, with a plush green interior and cocktail bar (with a Jacuzzi on the way), but it’s still scary. Wonder if you have any problems with doormen when you crawl out of this puppy on your way to the club? Between £1600 and £4000 per hire, and don’t expect to get anywhere very fast will you?  So at Christmas we pulled out the best armored personnel carrier from 30 we had…

Biothene – biodegradable plastic

Biothene is degradable polythene which stays stable unless exposed to sunlight. Once it’s in sunlight it eventually mushes up into a harmless non-toxic material and water. If we start using enough of this stuff, will we begin to reduce our growing landfill problems? Answers on a milk carton to… Tags: biothene, degradable+plastic, polythene

Sabeco Solar Powered Shaver – sun seared stubble smoother

The Sabeco Solar Powered Shaver. At last, freed from the slavery of scarce power sockets and flaky rechargeable batteries, men spring loose from their bearded shackles and escape into a universe of perpetually smooth cheeks and svelte legs. Grievously wounded, designer stubble  retreats to a secluded retirement condo in Boca Raton owned by David Beckham and Brad Pitt. The End. Bring it to Life Stickers – aaargh…it talks….

Bring it to Life Stickers. Now come on, seriously. If you’re so sad that you need to make your stapler look like Aunt Maude, then you need help. Remember folks, anthropomorphism is the last pathetic refuge of the lonely geek. Just ask Suki, my cute likkle laptop. She knows. $7.95 (£3.58).  What could be funnier than giving your shredder some fangs, a wacky set of buck teeth on your hole punch, a glare on your stapler that says – hands off! If you want…

SecVoice – secure cellular and landline calls

SecVoice. Freeware software to encrypt your phone conversations and gain the type of privacy you’ve always wanted. One tip, though. Try not to bellow into your handset on the crowded bus next time as it tends to remove much of the security from your chat. For Windows Pocket PC and Smartphones only.  Our secure phone technology uses two steps to encrypt the voice: 1. Key exchange (using a key exchange algorithm). 2. Voice Encryption (using a symmetric algorithm). These two…

Tex2 – low cost cell phone text messaging via your data plan

Tex2 is a Java application for mobile phones that lets you send text messages using your Internet data plan rather than the standard SMS network. The result is a much cheaper charge per message – around 0.5p vs 12.0p for standard SMS. The catch is that your recipient has to be running the Tex2 program as well, but there’s an ‘Invite a friend’ feature, so that may not be a huge problem. Sounds quite cool.  tex2 phone software lets you send messages in a…

MiniCat – the backpack sailing boat

The MiniCat is the perfect sailing craft for that spontaneous weekend away. Just sling it over your shoulder, toodle down to the nearest waterhole and bob around to your heart’s content, making pirate noises and fishing for your supper. Ah, if only life were that simple, though. Priced from an arm wrenching £2450.00.  Assembling the MiniCat is a doddle. Its smart design means that one person can assemble it, without tools, in around 30 minutes. And because the entire kit…

Prenatal Sound Teddy Bear – soothing sounds for happy rug-rats

The Prenatal Sound Teddy Bear sounds just like a womb with lots of slushing and gurgling and heartbeat stuff going on. In fact it’s so darn noisy a kid can’t get a wink of sleep in here. Hey, bud, can ya tone it down a bit purlease? Sheesh! $49.95.  This is the teddy bear that plays the authentic prenatal sounds babies hear while in the womb, providing a calming whirring sound that soothes infants because the noise simulates intrauterine sounds…

Ocean Fantasy De-Stress Dolphin Lamp – more peace on earth please

The Ocean Fantasy Dolphin Lamp from Takara Tomy is an LED based relaxation device which pulsates and moves just like a real dolphin, along with suitably clicky Flipper like underwater noises. Check the video. Er…correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it the Japanese who regularly slaughter thousands of dolphins [warning: not a pretty image] every year in a massive cull? And Tomy is a Japanese company right? Not much peace and relaxation there then, eh? So maybe save your $69.00 and give it…
