Bit.ly – super cool new URL shortener adds real value to the genre

Just picked up on the new Bit.ly service and it looks to be very cool indeed. On the face of it, just another URL shortening application – enter in a long URL and get back a short version to embed in emails, blog posts or whatever. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find lots of loveliness lurking. For example you can add your own keyword and create your own shortcut URL (e.g. http://bit.ly/redmusic). I know that class leader TinyURL has just…

Google Mail Labs – cool new experimental email features now online at the big G

Google Mail has added a new Labs tab to the interface. It leads to a bunch of hacks and tools that Google want to test out with the email client. Clever engineering as ever, release early, test and implement or discard. To use them, you just click on the Enable button on the right and off you go. Disable via the same panel. There’s a couple of interesting ones up at the moment out of the dozen or so on…

Groupzz up and running properly again…

I’ve just updated my Groupzz music search engine. Yep, bought another ‘off the shelf’ clownsuit script (a mere $19.99 this time!) to replace the broken one, it took 10 minutes to edit and upload. I guess this is the only downside to being a cheapskate ghetto web mogul – stuff breaks. Arf! I still think it’s an interesting experiment though! Oh and did I mention I’ve got a video search engine up as well? Oops, sorry forgot… Tags: groupzz, music+search, clownsuits, online+application, video+search+engine

Talking 14 Language Translator – que?

The Talking 14 Language Translator may not have soft brown hair, green eyes and a lovely lilting accent, but hey, it’s cheaper and doesn’t demand a tip at the end of the vacation. And the fact that it does the talking for you, really does save the world from having to endure your obnoxiously loud and mangled pronunciation of the word for bathroom. Oh and did we mention it’s a currency, measure and time converter too? Well now you know….

Halo 6 in 1 Projection Alarm Clock Flashlight – everything you need to know in one small package

The Halo 6–in-1 Projection Alarm Clock Flashlight strikes a chord. No really. There you are asleep in your tent deep in the dark forest when suddenly an alarm goes off in your ear. Startled, you reach for your Halo and check the time and then realise that you need to be back at work in a few days, so you check the calendar just to be sure it’s still Saturday. Relieved, you settle back in your deluxe sleeping bag to catch some more…

Sudden Stop – super bright warning LEDs make braking safer

Sudden Stop is a bolt-on array of super bright LED lights that warn following drivers if you make an emergency stop in your car. Not only are they bright, but they flash too and they’re battery operated so you don’t have to re-wire the car to install the things. Oh and the batteries last 3 years or so. $29.95.  There are 1.6 million rear-end collisions in the US every year – chances are you know someone who’s been involved in one….

Knowmore Firefox Extension – learn more about the ethical position of companies as you browse

The Knowmore.org Firefox Extension provides a snapshot view of a company’s environmental and social impact via the use of icons delivered alongside search results, directly on sites or via the Amazon product catalogue. It uses a simple device of using green or red icons to depict the company’s stance on business ethics, worker rights, environmental issues etc, and it’s something which could help persuade some of the larger conglomerates to improve their attitudes if enough people used and reacted to the results….

AC Browser Plus Free – free dual pane Windows file manager plus

AC Browser Plus Free Edition is a freeware file manager utility which comes with some interesting extras that you certainly won’t find in plain old Windows Explorer. Like an FTP client, encryption tool and image converter. The interface is a little too cluttered for my liking, but the feature set is very impressive for a freebie. Worth a look.  Quick viewers. View and edit text, and image files straight from the file manager! You can also convert images to another…

The Non-Stop Train – detachable docking compartment takes the strain

The Non-Stop Train concept is quite an interesting idea. Instead of the train halting at every stop, it continues through stations while detaching and collecting a transit compartment for people who want to get on and off. The video explains it better than I can. The interesting thing is that the infrastructure costs could be relatively small, although as with anything complex, there’s always more scope for things to go wrong. Infrared Tracker R/C Car – point and drive toy promises to drive the cat batty

This Infrared Tracker R/C Car gives the phrase remote control a whole new meaning. Instead of waggling a wheel and throttle arrangement on the controller, you simply point the beam of light onto the floor and the car follows it like an obedient and ever so plasticy pet. Apparently the dot can be up to 5 feet ahead of the car and it will still be able to track it, but do try to remember that walls can be harmful to…

Zrad Wireless Earbud with Wallet Receiver – talk to the cash, ‘cos the sideburns ain’t listenin’

There’s something delicious about being seen in public chatting to your wallet, which is why we had to feature this lovely Zrad Wireless Earbud with Wallet Receiver today.
