Quick Restore Maker – freeware lets you set restore points instantly

Sometimes you need to set a restore point on your Windows machine fast, just in case something goes wrong with an installation or whatever. The free Quick Restore Maker utility lets you create one with a single click instead of having to go to Control Panel, System…etc etc etc blah. One for the toolbox methinks.  Normally, to create a system restore point, you have to, via the Control Panel, open the System Protection box and then open the System Restore utility (rstrui.exe)…

Dog DNA Analysis Kit – Make sure you’ve bought a dog

This Dog DNA Analysis Kit is for today’s paranoid dog owner, worried that Poochie isn’t quite 100% Pomeranian. Somehow swab the dog’s cheeks, seal up it in the envelope provided and post it away. In a few weeks you’ll know for sure what’s in your pup and the proof will be suitable for framing. US$59.95 Is your mixed-breed dog a mystery? Adjustable Hue Desk Lamp – No rhythm but plenty of hues

Depending on what time of the day you use your lamp, you may like to adjust its colour to match the ambient. Or not. Either way Hammacher can help with this Adjustable Hue Desk Lamp. It’s a cold cathode fluoro lamp (CCFL) and the hue can be adjusted from 2700K (warm incandescent bulb colour) all the way up to 6500K (overcast daylight). It would also make a useful photography light source. US$199.95 This is the only desk lamp that allows…

PowerGenix NiZn Batteries – cool eco batteries set out to rescue our gadgets

These PowerGenix NiZn Batteries are a new type of rechargeable battery. Whilst the chemistry behind them isn’t new, until recently they had a very limited recharging life. They work at 1.65 Volts unlike the NiCad and NiMH rechargeables which produce 1.2 Volts, and alkalines which produce 1.5 Volts. They have quite a few advantages over existing batteries; they can be recharged up to 1,000 times, they’re much less toxic and much easier to recycle. There’s even a suggestion in Wikipedia…

Flexy – The eco friendly slinky

The fun, accordion-shaped Flexy reminds me of my favorite low-tech gizmo, the Slinky. But it goes one better – it’s earth-friendly! Made of recycled cardboard, the Flexy is biodegradable and comes with instructions to help you make it move in ways including a rippling rainbow, a big dipper and cool sculpture-like shapes. It claims to be able to do everything its metal counterpart can do. Though not as compact as the old stand-by, it promises not to tangle like a…

Pave Guard – Innovative solar powered bridge de-icer

Pave Guard – a new bridge deck heating system that uses solar power to keep bridges ice free – will be installed on two bridges in Missouri this summer. Patterned after the idea of radiant floor heating, this new technology will eliminate the need for corrosive pavement clearing materials during times of ice and snow. The system will automatically activate when the temperature reaches 38F, sending heated water flowing through its tubing and preventing the concrete from freezing. Kansas City’s…

ZAGGbox – the digital life media center

The ZAGGbox is a media box with enough tech smarts to fill a space shuttle. Not only will it record and store music, videos and photos, but it automatically transcodes all captured video into 2 formats, one for the TV and the other for your mobile phone or device. Clever eh? The unit will also stream your content wherever you want, a la Slingbox, and comes with an internal web server if that is your desire. There’s an iPhone client…

Alex – the dummies guide laptop for…um…clever people?

Alex is a new laptop computer designed for the technologically challenged. The specifications are somewhat underwhelming, 15.4 inch screen, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB disk, WiFi, webcam and DVD RW, but the whole package is focused on ease of use not technical mastery. Which is probably just as well. So the whole thing needs a USB dongle to operate (security), the Linux operating system (we assume) is cloaked in a cutesy menu driven interface and you get all the hand-holding…

Sensor Soap Pump – Hands free hand soap

This hands-free Sensor Soap Pump will keep your hand soap handy and very stylish. The pump has an infra-red sensor to detect your hand and can dispense one of four different volumes of soap.
