Neat little Google trick

Here’s a neat little trick I just learned. If you want to force Google search to return results for a particular country, just add on &hl=uk&gl=uk to the end of your search results URL, where the ‘uk’ is replaced by your desired country domain. Hit go again and you’ll get a set of results from the country. It’s not perfect, but it helps. Tags: domains, google, search

Domain siezures by the US now moving into stormtrooper territory

Just read with astonishment that the US government is now stamping over the sovereignty of foreign governments –  in this case Spain –  by seizing domains which it deems to be unlawful, even if the country in question has ruled it lawful. The case in point concerns Rojadirecta.org, a Spanish site which legally streams sporting events across the web. The site has twice been ruled legal by Spanish courts, but apparently that doesn’t count when you’re the USA. So now…

Yellow Pages finally makes opting-out an easy task

The past couple of months have been filled with nothing but ice and snow where I live. Just this past week we’ve been hit with a severe ice storm. The entire city was shut down for a couple of days. But you’ll never guess what somehow made its way onto my front step. That’s right, a Yellow Pages book. How on earth it got there in its plastic wrapping in that terrible weather is beyond me. Well now I can…

SoundBite takes a different approach to the hearing aid

Most of us are blessed to have good hearing in both of our ears. However, for those that aren’t so fortunate, there are obstacles to overcome. Thankfully in this day and age, we have a lot of different technologies to help accomplish this. One of the more interesting ones I’ve seen is this gadget called the SoundBite. This is for people who have issues hearing out of one of their ears. One part of the device is worn around the…

Google Shopper comes to the iPhone

Android users have had access to a pretty useful tool for a while, called Google Shopper. This app takes shopping and price comparison to a whole new level. Not only can you scan barcodes to check prices, but you can even take a snapshot of the cover or speak the name of a product. Then you’ll be able to select the product and check prices, reviews and even local availability. Well Google has finally decided to bring this wonderful little…

Mozy nixes unlimited storage plans

I’ve been a big fan of Mozy‘s cloud storage service, and have been using it for a couple of years now. It’s saved me a lot of hassle on more than one occasion. Granted, I just use their free service, because I back up most of my larger files on a small NAS. However, the day-to-day use files get backed up to the cloud. It’s quite wonderful, really. Unfortunately for the heavier users, you’ll find that the winds of change…

Beatbots announces a home version of their Keepon dancing bot

When was the last time you thought to yourself, I want a robot that dances? So that might not be a thought that crosses your mind on a regular basis, but if you’ve seen this Keepon bot before, you understand what I mean. This little creature is cute and cuddly, and will bust a move when introduced to music. They’re actually some pretty good moves, for a blob. Of course it’s really not worth the $30,000 asking price (the bots…

Wireless Dominoes don’t need to touch to produce the domino effect

Dominoes. I’m sure that most of us had a set when we were children, but how many kids actually played the game associated with them? I recall that it was a long time before I ever learned how to play it. I was far more interested in setting up the little blocks and watching them fall down in succession. What was disappointing was when you finally got an elaborate setup, only to have one of them fall short, ruining the…

EV Himiko – retro styling meets electric power delivers 550 km a charge

The EV Himiko is a retro styled coupe from Japanese auto maker Mitsuoka Motors, which takes a basic running chassis from a Mazda MX-5, mates it to a fancy pants top half and inserts a shed load (i.e. around 168) of Lithium batteries to get a retro roadster capable of running for 550 km between charges. There’s no word on price as yet, but rest assured it’s not going to be cheap, unless the developers have suddenly come up with a…

LED Handwritten Menu Sign Boards

Anytime I go out, I see at least one neon menu sign sitting somewhere. These kinds of signs never seem to fully catch my attention because theyre not LEDs. As lame as that may sound, its true. I am like a mosquito a lamp for LED lights, and now that there are LED Flourescent Writing Boards, theres a good chance youll see me standing bug-eyed in front of it. These writing boards will be whatever you want them to be….

Simplex Series locks arent safe

There are locks out there of every kind; ones that require keys, card keys, and a certain combination of buttons to be pushed. If you look at the picture, youve likely seen one of these very popular door locks. Made by Kaba-IIco, this Simplex Series lock was found to be extremely easy to break into. There is a pretty big lawsuit floating around because these locks can be opened with a very powerful magnet. All of the locks excluding the…

Zumreed X2 Hybrid Headphones/Speakers

Weve all used our headphones as speakers at least once by blasting the volume all the way up. Zumreed has created a new set of headphones that will now play both the role of headphones and speakers without making you destroy the listening quality. The X2 Hybrid headphones look like any other normal pair of headphones on the outside, but with the flip of a switch, they can become external speakers. This is an option Ive wanted to have since…

EmbedPlus – YouTube videos get cool features like slow-mo, instant replay and zoom…

EmbedPlus is a very cool new YouTube video embedding tool which lets you add functionality like zoom and slow motion to embedded videos on a web page. The service is free, and works by layering a wrapper on top of the standard YouTube embed player, which adds in extra controls and buttons. Not only do you get extra features, but also a ‘more’ button which pushes the viewer over to a page full of related content, which is also neat. The…
