RagTime.

RagTime. Actually this looks to be an exceedingly well written piece of publishing/design software. Better still, the RagTime Solo version is free for personal non-commercial use. Download it now while the offer lasts. Apple and PC.  Five reasons why you need RagTime Solo:1. You don’t want to persuade your wordprocessor or spreadsheet program to do layout any longer.2. You want to break the barriers of common wordprocessors and spreadsheet programs and handle everything on one page: Texts, pictures, spreadsheets, charts…

Print this!

National Geographic are offering free PDFs of some of their famous photos to allow you to print off 25 x 33 inch posters at home. New posters are added each month. What nice people, and what a happy coincidence that there are adverts for HP printers and inks on the page, eh?

Phat video.

The Turbine Video Encoder program is most excellent way of converting standard video clips to the Flash format in order to embed and play them easily on web sites. Best of all, there’s a free version to play with.  Here we see some rare footage of one of the Ferret’s closest relatives performing for an adoring polecat audience somewhere deep in the Swedish countryside. De-dupe.

Duper. Kind of useful freeware for locating duplicate files like digital photos methinks.  Duper scans directories for identical files, allows you to easily locate and delete duplicates wasting hard disk space. The latest version is 20041011 (revision 296). The philosophy behind Duper is to be fast, free and small…Duper first scans all file sizes. If any two file sizes are identical, an MD5 sum is computed for each file and then used to determine if they are identical. After scanning, it…

Images galore.

Yet more free photo sites. FreeFoto.com and StockVault. Well, I think it’s fairly safe to say that the world is never going to be short of a free image or two again. Much more interesting, though, is the ArtBitz site, which offers real live illustrations for very reasonable prices. Super hand drawn clipart if you will, like the fabbo surf scene above. It’s a small collection right now, but still worth a look.

Unknown known.

Unknown Devices. Pretty useful Windows freeware tool if you ever come up against one of the dreaded, ‘Windows cannot install the driver for this device’ type messages.  Unknown Devices helps you find what those unknown devices in Device Manager really are. By checking Device Manager for unknown devices and extracting information from it, this program attempts to figure out what the device is. You might not have to open your case or look up random numbers off of PCI cards…
