EssentialPIM Portable – freeware lets you carry your life around on a flash drive

This free EssentialPIM program is proof that even in this web-centric day and age people still enjoy using good old fashioned personal information managers to organise their lives. The freeware version offers the core features you need to stay on top of things, including a scheduler, to-do list, outliner and contact manager, although you’ll need to pony up $39.95 for the email functionality of the Pro version. One cute option is to install the whole thing onto a USB drive and carry it around…

Threatfire – supercharge your anti virus with this free add-on

Threatfire is a freeware anti virus program which sits alongside your normal anti-virus software to add an extra layer of protection. It doesn’t use standard signatures but is behaviour based, which the developers claim makes it more efficient at catching unknown or ‘zero-day’ malware attacks. Apparently this means you’ll enjoy up to 217% more protection than with a single A/V program like Kaspersky or Trend Micro installed. Golly!  ThreatFire is zero-day security software designed for the average consumer. ThreatFire protects in…

Auslogics Disk Defrag – the free easy way to improve the performance of your PC

There’s no doubt that using a hard disk defragging tool is one of easiest ways to improve the performance of an older computer, so it’s always good to report on new products which offer value in this area. The Auslogics Disk Defrag program is a free utility which not only defrags the drive, but also optimises the hard disk by moving system files to a more efficient location for faster loading, and by ‘consolidating’ free space to improve speed. FrostWire – open source P2P freeware combines iTunes with BitTorrent

FrostWire is a cool freeware program for sharing files with your nearest and dearest. Or indeed other people. Based around the original Limewire code and firmly wedded to Open Source principles, this new product still centers around the Gnutella protocols, but adds in some super new sauce to make it even more useful. Like the ‘Automatically Add to iTunes’ feature which adds downloaded tracks to your iTunes account without you having to lift a finger. Neat.  FrostWire, a Gnutella Peer-to-Peer…
