Need more contributions though, so chip in designer people. FavIcon from Pics. Great little free service to create favicons from your favourite images. Even animated ones. Nice. Rounded Cornr. Ajax13 Web Appliction Suite – online office

Ajax13. I’ve talked about this free suite of web applications before, but it’s worth a second mention, if only because they’re beginning to flesh out the range of apps nicely. It’s still a product shy of a business model, but hey, you can’t shoot them for trying. Their main problem is that people do not immediately think Web when they want to create a document or produce a presentation. They think Microsoft. So how do you get over that ‘top of mind’ problem…

Google Mail Fetcher – at last a real spam solution?

Google Mail Fetcher. Mmm….Google seems to be in the process of rolling out a new service which will let you fetch email messages from 5 other non-Gmail POP accounts that you own. This could be a killer feature for the big G., since it should immediately let you take advantage of the superb Gmail spam filtering and clean up the naff stuff that other services leave in. You’ll also be able to forward messages to your mobile phone using the free Mobile…

Podmailer – large file transfer via email

Podmailer is a new free P2P file transfer service which promises to let you transmit files of any size using just your email program. For example sending the full quality video footage of your recent wedding to your ex. That kind of thing. It’s not a totally new idea, although what makes this one different is that it’s based on Amazon’s new S3 service, so it should scale nicely with demand. Just download the Mac or PC client and off you go. Apparently….

Camstudio – free screen recorder

Camstudio. The veteran screen recorder is back as a free download. Great for making demos, tutorials and the like. Windows only but definitely worth the download for that rainy day requirement.  CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)…CamStudio can also add high-quality, anti-aliased (no jagged edges) screen captions to your…

Radio Mundu – 100,000 radio stations on your mobile

Radio Mundu. Cross platform Internet radio program which lets you stream radio, create playlists and store fave stations. It’s in free beta at the moment, but you’ll need a reasonably priced data service from your mobile phone provider if you don’t want to go bankrupt using it, but still worth a look. Unfortunately they don’t support the earlier versions of Symbian, so I haven’t been able to test it as yet. But I will.  Why stop at a few hundred songs, when you can pick from…

Giveaway of the Day – software, for free

Giveaway of the Day. Nice idea. Every day the site offers a free download of a commercial software program. Kind of like Woot! for software, but without money. There’s no limit to the amount of downloads each day, but after 24 hours they move on to the next package. Neat, and no, I don’t know how they intend to make money! [Thanks Dan]  Every day we offer licensed software you’d have to buy otherwise, for free! Yes, we are giving away software,…

True Combat: Elite – Open Source gaming gets serious

True Combat: Elite is an Open Source FPS game which is based on the Wolfenstein engine. It’s very pretty, and looks to have all the playability of any standard commercial game out there. Is this the start of a new trend for OSS? Download it and see what you think. Oh and did we mention it’s Linux, Windows and Mac?  Now, the most important question: “What can you expect from TC:E?” TC:E is a tactical-team shooter, set up in a…

The folk at MobileRated maintain a pretty neat catalogue of free games for your mobile phone for download and enjoyment. Keylogger killer

KL-Detector is a freeware program which promises to find out whether your keystrokes are being surreptitiously monitored by a keylogger without your knowledge. It won’t remove a keylogger, just detect it. It’s one of those utilities you hope you’ll never need, but worth keeping a note of just in case, eh? [Check out I Hate Keyloggers too. It’s $30.00 and prevents hardware or software keyloggers from recording your keystrokes by blocking the log file.]  Use KL-Detector to find out whether your activity is being recorded…

PandoraBrowse

PandoraBrowse. At last you can listen to your favourite Pandora custom music streams without having a browser window dedicated to the purpose. Because this free little utility minimises it to the system tray. Nice.  PandoraBrowse is a mini browse for the Pandora.com music service. PandoraBrowse lives in your Windows systray and gets off your taskbar while still playing music!

Grocist – stock control for your kitchen

Grocist. Billed as a barcode driven grocery list application. You scan barcodes of empty containers you’re throwing away (or recycling?) in the kitchen, and the software automatically creates a shopping list for you, using an online UPC database and laptop. I think it’s a fab idea, but it doesn’t go far enough. Why not dump the PC entirely and go straight from barcode scanner to smartphone? That way you can scan wirelessly from scanner to smartphone, and do the lookup and grocery…

Paint.net – free photo manipulation

Paint.NET. Freeware photo and image editing program. You need the .net stuff to make it work though, which I think is a bit of a drag. Anyhoo, it’s free, so let’s not be churlish, eh?   Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by…
