Web 2.0 Suicide Machine – kill off your social networking and live again

Aaargh what happened to the brilliant Web 2.0 Suicide Machine service? The world desperately needs a single place from which to delete all that time sucking, useless social networking sludge and breathe free again. And now it looks as though it’s gone. Wiped by ruthless gang-lord social network VPs, banished to the land of crushing commercial interests. We’re all a lot poorer because of this loss. Gah!! FrostWire – open source P2P freeware combines iTunes with BitTorrent

FrostWire is a cool freeware program for sharing files with your nearest and dearest. Or indeed other people. Based around the original Limewire code and firmly wedded to Open Source principles, this new product still centers around the Gnutella protocols, but adds in some super new sauce to make it even more useful. Like the ‘Automatically Add to iTunes’ feature which adds downloaded tracks to your iTunes account without you having to lift a finger. Neat.  FrostWire, a Gnutella Peer-to-Peer…

Woya – the very cool way to find some *real* bargains on the web

Woya is super cool new shopping comparison service which lets you compare prices from unusual places like Craigslist, eBay and Overstock as well as the standard Amazon type retailers. The ability to check classified used prices alongside new in the tabbed interface is neat, as is the instant access to multiple product reviews from various sources. The interface is a tad too cluttered for my liking – the devs could easily remove a few features from the front page and still…

New Free Red Ferret iPhone App – read it and weeple people…

Listen up and don’t say we don’t give you nuffing, ‘K? My chum Marc Kawam from Odiogo (which provides the spiffy audio version of our Ferret posts) has gone and created a free Red Ferret iPhone app for you all to enjoy.   Not only does it give you a beautifully formatted Ferret for all your reading pleasure and let you instantly email posts to a friend, but also offers an extremely awesome spoken audio version of the posts, so you can listen along while washing…

Ripple – could this open source P2P payment system one day cut banks out of the loop?

Ripple is an ingenious Peer to Peer payment system which relies on a network of trust and relationships – community if you will – whereby people grant each other a certain level of credit worthiness in order to facilitate transactions. It’s all very high level theory at the moment, but what makes it interesting is the fact that it goes beyond mere virtual currencies and barter to offer a real possibility of moving value from place to place irrespective of nationalities or…

Public Earth – the public wiki resource for cool places everywhere

Public Earth aims to provide an alternative to all the proprietary maps and location based services on the Net by offering a completely free to all wiki based site where you can add your favourite place, service or area. Think Wikipedia for locations. The open ended nature and geographical scope of the site make it a very ambitious project, but that’s a good thing right? It’s already possible to see the potential of a free service which can offer guidance…

CouchSurfing – Facebook meets Lonely Planet for a fun filled weekend of mirth

CouchSurfing is a super cool social network which takes social interaction off the computer monitor and returns it firmly back into the realm of real life. The non-profit works by helping travellers hook up with locals to share accommodation – or sometimes just a friendly chat and drink – on their journey, but it seems to go much further than just finding a cheap place to crash. According to the site they’ve helped facilitate 1.25 million stays, 1.5 million new friends have…

Twitcritics – Movie reviews from Twitterers

Twitcritics is an aggregator that scours the Twitterverse looking for tweets referring to current movies. It then determines whether the tweet is positive or negative and adds them all up giving the movie a rating. All the tweets are linked and visible so it’s easy to click through and check to see if it’s a genuine Twitter account or shameless astroturfer. It’s not perfect though, that’s what the Beta bit is all about I guess. For instance Amelia is currently…

Maggwire – sample magazines online

Maggwire is an online link list of glossy mainstream magazine articles presented for our reading pleasure in a trendy social networked way. Surprisingly it works. The format is easy to browse (a la Digg.com) and the idea that the system learns from your reading habits which articles to push up the page, might just make the whole thing quite valuable. It’s all very wisdom of the crowds, with voting, sharing and discussion of course, but overall the combination of simple interface and…

Stylizer – freeware CSS editor lets you craft gorgeous websites…maybe

Stylizer is a free CSS editor which is designed to let non-coder people wrestle the CSS of their site into shape using an on-screen menu system. The heart of the software lies in its real time preview which lets you manipulate and tweak the page right before your eyes, which makes the whole process of alignment and beauty much easier for the brain. There are a fair few freebie CSS editors around, but none as ambitious as this one, and there…

Yebol – Semantic web search

I’ve been playing around with Yebol, a newish, and still beta search engine, and to my surprise I’ve found that I like it. Yebol is one of these semantic search engines, in that it combines results found using computer algorithms with results found by people to give you a great mix of search results. Yebol takes the opposite approach to the now-mainstream way of searching. It’s the same way that Google was a much-improved version of the old cluttered way…

WhenIsGood – no-fuss online meeting planner

If you have ever tried to coordinate a teleconference, meeting, or even dinner with your mates you know how hard it can be to find a time that is good for everyone. What’s more, if you’re doing this by email it can be pretty complicated keeping track of who replied and when they said they could make it. In most office situations there would be some enterprise application to help out, but outside of the office what can you use?…

Allerta InPulse – mobile phone accessory keeps your hands free while messaging

The Allerta InPulse is a wrist worn mobile phone accessory that will display alerts and messages as they arrive to your phone without you needing to take the handset out of your pocket or bag. Right now it’s all very vapourware, with vague promises and specifications flickering across the Web. The inventor, Eric Migicovsky (pictured below) came up with the idea while at the University of Waterloo in Canada, and has been working on commercialising the thing since the tail end…

SeaMonkey – a cute but strangely irrelevant all-in-one Internet suite from Mozilla

Back in the day web browsers were not content to stay simple but bloated into huge sprawling products called Internet Suites. Well hey ho, here we are a decade later and what do I spy – why the SeaMonkey Internet Application Suite. My how time flies…in a circle. This suite of net tools contains a browser (based on Firefox ‘natch) an email client, HTML editor for creating web pages, IRC chat client and some web dev tools. It’s a lovely…

Google Wave Add-on For Firefox – free plugin brings Wave to your browser

I’ve been playing around with Google Wave for a few days now, and it’s definitely a fascinating piece of technology. The idea is to drag email and text communications into the 21st century by restructuring the way we chat with each other. As with all innovative tech, it’s going to take a while to see what benefit this initiative will bring to the table, but I’m tending to agree with Daniel Tenner in his view that at the very least…
