Geni – the most viral application in history?

I’ve been playing with Geni for a few weeks and it’s amazing. Forget about all those social networking apps and mySpace clones, this is the single most sticky, viral and pervasive application I’ve yet come across on the Web. Period. It’s nothing more than a family tree app, but it’s designed to be so easy to use and so simple to share, that it sucks you in before you realise. You see every time you add a family member and…

iTunes Sync and pPod – a little bit of Apple turnover

Want to replicate the whole iPod experience without actually having to own one? Then download and install pPod as the music player on your Pocket PC phone, and use the free iTunes Sync to sync up your iTunes account to the memory card of the phone via a memory card reader. Voila – playlists, funkadelic player interfaces and everythang! And all for free (except the charges for the iTunes catalogue of course). There’s also a free Mac sync proggie called SyncTunes which is worth remembering….

Vuvox – create amazing photo slideshows online

Vuvox is an extremely pretty looking online slideshow creator which comes with just about every bell and whistle you’re ever going to need. It’s in inevitable beta at the moment, so there are things like music and annotation that don’t work, but it looks like it’ll be a wowser when it’s finished. I especially like the imaginative templates that you get as standard, so much better than than the usual boring stuff like calendars or photo frames. Definitely worth a…

VRX Triple Screen “Limited Edition 001” – the ultimate gaming rig

The VRX Triple Screen “Limited Edition 001” is being described as ‘the most advanced racing hardware on the planet.’ Which is a pretty bold claim. However, after looking at the spec, we probably concur. And no, we haven’t asked about the price, and neither should you.  # 4 Xbox 360 Elites (while quantities last) # 4 Copies Forza Motorsport2 # Xbox 360 HD DVD player # Xbox 360 camera # Xbox 360 wireless headset # Microsoft Zune # Microsoft Force…

Low light photography breakthrough on the way?

The boffins at Kodak have apparently come up with a ‘breakthrough’ method of improving low light photography. They have come up with a new light filter which they are hoping to supply to mobile phone camera companies and the rest of the imaging industry. Anything that makes low light photos better than they are now is a Great Thing in our book.  When the shutter opens on a digital camera, an image is projected onto the sensor, which converts light…

Watchphone frenzy – talk to the wrist, ‘cos the phone ain’t listenin’

The WatchPhone M300. Isn’t that typical, you wait around for years and all of a sudden up pops two watch phones at the same time. Tsk. I’ve got to say, in terms of sheer cool usefulness, these have got to have the edge on an iPhone. Especially once they bring on some decent sized memory for the MP3 player (or a microSD slot). $305.00.  Phonebook SMS (receive only) 1″OLED, 65K Screen GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 Bluetooth: A2DP, AVRCP Music: MP3,…

Big Belly Solar Compactor – green, clean, refuse machine

The Big Belly Solar Cordless Compactor is a trash compactor which copes with litter in just about any location where rogue animals – including humans of course – and electricity supplies are a problem. Made from weather resistant galvanised steel and corrosion tested. Around $3600.00 a unit, but apparently the payback is fast because of the reduced need for garbage collections.  The BigBelly Cordless Compaction system runs on a 12-Volt battery, which is kept charged by the solar panel. The…

Google transits maps – transport information on maps

Google has added a cool transport feature to maps. Click on a bus, train or underground (subway) icon and you’ll view information about that station. A second click will deliver more detailed stuff (like departure times etc). These guys are keeping it on, aren’t they? Oh and it looks as though they’ll soon roll out a Trip Planner feature too, to let you arrange your public transport journey in detail (including a cost comparison with driving there). Amazing. EyeOS 1.0 – the operating system comes to the browser

The new EyeOS 1.0 is being billed as an Open Source ‘web operating system’, which means that you can install applications, tweak settings and do a whole passel of O/S type things just using your web browser. The technology is all very innovative, but will it really deliver some compelling new experience, or is it just another online desktop alternative? Only time will tell. In the meantime take a look for yourself and let me know what you think. I’m not fully ‘getting…

Explay OIO – nano projectors arrive (almost)

The Explay OIO is the latest entrant in the race to deliver large screen displays from very small devices. The idea is that we’ll all one day walk around with mobile phones, PDAs, video players etc which will contain their own small – nano – projectors capable of beaming large screen images onto the nearest flat surface. The OIO is apparently supposed to ship next year, but we’re not holding our breath. There’s a lot of hard core technology that’s going to be needed to make this tech work…

Build your own electric car for $800 – DIY eco warrior

Greg Coleman has built an electric car for $800.00. We’re not exactly talking Tesla type functionality here, it’s an old Yugo that he’s converted, but the mere fact that an ordinary person can do this proves that there’s a lot of misinformation going around at the moment from the motor industry and beyond. Go Greg, go.  I have driven the car home tonight for the first time. Road speed is about 35 mph because of the 5 HP motor. This will…

California Roadster – the fun lovin’ green machine

The California Roadster neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV) may be a glorified golf cart at heart, but at least it’s got some character. aluminium chassis, shiny chrome fittings, four passengers, 35 mile range, 25 mph maximum speed (whoa!) and recharge in 4 to 6 hours. $8,995.00 gives you an eco runabout which will have heads turning down at the local mall car park.  ACG has also been certified by the Federal Government to offer the California Roadster as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle…
