Cloud Antivirus – cloud based antivirus software

Panda Security, those helpful people with the online virus scanner have gone one better with the Cloud Antivirus. Now instead of having a virus scanner running on your machine, clogging up your runtime and slowing everything down, you can use the thin-client model and let Panda’s machines do all the work. By doing it this way, you escape the continual update drudge of conventional antivirus and everything including software updates is maintained on the server side. You’ll need an active…

Ghost Pigeon – untraceable calls and texts on your mobile phone

Ghost Pigeon is a piece of cloaking software that masks all incoming and outgoing calls and text messages on your handset so people can’t examine your phone and discover who you’ve been in contact with or when. It’s probably useful for employees searching or interviewing for a new job on their company phone, or for CEOs negotiating a golden handshake and stuff. Of course it could also be used for cocaine smugglers, but we’re not going there. The software itself is apparently…

Hasta La Vista, Baby – Texans attempting to run Windows Vista outta town?

More Windows Vista woes. So the Texas Senate is trying to insert a budget clause which would make it difficult for state agencies to purchase Windows Vista? Yeah well, it couldn’t happen to a more awful piece of code. Yee-haw…  Sen. Juan Hinojosa, D-McAllen, added the provision in committee and said it’s meant to block purchases of the technology, which has been targeted by criticism: “Don’t buy it, because it’s not worth it.” Hinojosa, Senate Finance Committee vice chairman, said,…

Totally Rad Action Mix – changes your photos from drab to fab

Photoshop Actions are like macros for Adobe Photoshop. They allow you to create scripts replicating tasks to take the drudge out of photo retouching. You can make your own of course or download/purchase other people’s actions. The Totally Rad Action Mix is a range of actions published by Boutwell Studios. The actions are geared more towards portrait and wedding photography but you can use them for whatever you wish. It’s far simpler to see what they do by using them…

The Red Ferret Product of the Year 2008 – Software – Artisteer

Last year was the year of the CMS. By that I mean, it was the year WordPress came out of its shell and proved to the world that it could become as much of a mainstay of the Web as say, Paypal or Google. It’s for this reason that we’ve awarded Artisteer the software product of the year. This program, which lets you instantly create great looking CMS site themes, is not freeware, but the utility of the program is such…

MozBackup fail – file size limit cripples large messagebase backups

I hate to do this to a cool Open Source product like MozBackup, but it really let me down the other day when I needed to transfer my email message base across from one machine to another. The backup file was fine, but contained only a small part of my data. Apparently the program can only cope with messagebases up to 4 GB in size. My messagebase is around 12 GB, hence the problem with only getting a portion of my…

Windows Vista Woes – tip of the day

Another quickie Windows Vista tip. The other day I suddenly started getting ‘Windows Explorer has stopped Working’ errors on boot up, which were a mystery and annoying. After digging a bit discovered it was Adobe Shockwave causing the problem. Uninstalled Shockwave, problem went away. I seriously cannot remember having this much trouble with Windows 95 even.  From what I have seen so far we believe shockwave player software is causing windows defender to be removed which in turn is causing…

Laptop Alarm – protect your laptop in public places

Laptop Alarm. Software emits a piercing alarm if the power cable is unplugged, the laptop is shut-down or the mouse removed. Clearly designed for those times when you’re sitting in a public place (e.g. a library or local coffee shop) and need to use the restroom. Personally I’d take the laptop with me, as I somehow get the feeling that a loud alarm is not going to stop your machine disappearing out the door if it’s a Macbook Air. Know…
