Pig Tones – funny voices you can download to your GPS satnav

Pig Tones is designed to spice up your boring old GPS voice instructions by letting you download celebrity and novelty voices to your TomTom or Garmin satellite navigation devices. Hey, it’s not a horrible idea, although we suspect that having Arnie or Yoda navigate your way around town could get old real fast. Priced at $12.97 a package. [Via]  Actually, we just want you to love your GPS. We know…you can’t remember how you lived without it. But soon, that once-welcome voice…

YoYo Games – an online game making community

Nigel first blogged about Game Maker , the free game designing software, way back in 2003. Well a lot has happened in 5 years. The Gamemaker engine is now up to version 7 and they’ve made a lot of improvements. Using Game Maker you can now create platform games, first person shooters, third person shooters, massive multiplayer online games and construction/management games like Sim City. The games you can make have also improved allowing you to add 3D models as…

Thumbkey – the touchscreen keyboard for your mobile phone

They’re marketing Thumbkey as the ‘ultimate’ keyboard for touchscreen PDAs and mobile phones which may be a little strong, but from the specs and video it does look impressive. The secret sauce seems to lie in a combination of predictive text, proximity sensing and a robust word recognition dictionary. I haven’t had a chance to play with it yet, but it looks like a good contender to replace those static touchscreen keypads we all know and love. Ahem. Limited to…

Enhancing video with still photos – astonishing video technology creeps its way out of the test labs

This video demonstrates prototype video enhancing technology that may one day radically change the face of video production and editing. The team has basically come up with a set of software tools to help enhance resolution massively, touch up and remove objects, reduce camera shake and even enhance exposure and dynamic range all in post production. But don’t take our word for it, check out the video yourself, it’s pretty impressive. (Oh and do take a look at this amazing video tech from…

Workrave – don’t let RSI get you down

I’m sure everyone has dragged themselves out of their chair at 3am after a hard night reading the internets or levelling up in Warcraft. Trying to stand up, you can barely see straight, every muscle aches and it’s all you can do to walk as the blood returns to nether regions. Whilst this might be ok once or twice a year, people who work with computers every day need to prevent these injuries as the effects can linger for years….

McGuider – how to turn your mobile phone into a satnav with one SD card

McGuider is a GPS satellite navigation system on a stick. Or SD memory card to be more precise. No manual software installation needed. Just insert the card into your mobile phone card slot and the software auto-installs and finds your GPS chip (or dongle if it’s separate to the handset). After that it’s navigation time. The maps are TeleAtlas and it works on Windows Mobile and Symbian handsets. Shame they couldn’t make it a Java application to really open up the…

ClickFree Backup – the no-install data backup system for dummies

The new ClickFree Backup system is a single DVD that you insert into your computer and it automatically backs up your data to the DVD without you needing to install anything or even press a go button. Crazy, huh? But how’s it going to know which files to grab, I hear you ask with a cynical tone to your voice. Well, it comes in different flavours – for photos, music and office type data (which does email, MS office data…

Silver Pilot – software converts scanned negatives into photos

Silver Pilot is a software program that converts digitized negatives into proper photo images (aka positives). It has a fairly primitive interface, but from the look of the examples included seems to do the job as expected. Just select the negative image, give it a reference point, click on the start button and the job is done automatically. No doubt true artists will want to tweak and fiddle with the post-processing tools or fire up their fave image editor afterwards….
