Math Alarm Clock for Android – wake up now (or finish the arithmetic to snooze)

This Math Alarm Clock for Android is clever. First, it’s cruelly clever in making you solve a maths puzzle to switch the alarm off if you want to snooze. But most importantly, this is not a product you’re going to sling out of the window in annoyance. Unless of course you fancy scrabbling around on the sidewalk at 6am for the bits of your expensive smartphone.   Optionally requires you solve math equation(s)(4 difficulty levels) to snooze/dismiss the alarm. Power…

Gog – cool retro games, priced to go

Gog (Good Old Games) has repackaged a shed load of the old classic windows computer games and are now selling them, without DRM, at low low prices. We’re talking awesome titles like MDK, MYST, Silent Hunter, the Space Quest series Duke Nukem 3D et al. Oh yes, the yoof may mock the grafiks, but there’s some awesome gameplay out there from the past, and it’s great to see it getting a new lease of life at the $5.00 price point. What’s more they’re…

PSX4Droid – play Sony Playstation games on your Android phones

PSX4Droid is a PSX emulator which lets you play Playstation games on your Android phone. The emulator costs $5.99, and you’ll need a high end phone to get the most out of it, especially if you want to use the full controls. The software requires a bit of setup and config, and you’ll need to grab some ROMs of your games in order to play away. Here’s a full walkthrough of the process you need to complete. Looks like the days of the…

Postcards – send a snail mail postcard to anywhere direct from your camera phone

I just love this cool new free Postcards app for Android and iPhone. Just install it from the relevant marketplace, and you can then instantly convert any photo you take into a postcard which the company will mail for you through the postal service. Take the pic. Fire up the app and select it. Flip it over on-screen, add your choice of text (wish you were here?) and an address, either directly or from your contact book and press send. You’re directed…

Open Stack – free cloud computing for everyone

Rackspace has just announced the Open Stack initiative which basically provides a free Open Source software stack for creating your own cloud environment. What does that all mean? Well if you are a public service, company or even an individual with enough computing power (i.e. enough web servers), you can now download this software suite and create your own scalable, automated cluster of virtual computers to run web applications. Without having to hand over huge sums of cash. This means that if…

Photoshop – the new ‘content aware fill’ feature is a total blast

I’ve been playing with the new ‘content aware fill’ feature of Photoshop CS5 over the past few days and it’s amazing. Think of all those instances when you want to remove some person or thing from a photo and yet still have a nice background without laboriously firing up the clone tool or whatever. This is the solution.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJfIIqz1myc It’s great to see big companies coming up with genuinely valuable innovation (you listening Microsoft?) instead of just the small guys. Incidentally the…

PretonSaver Home – save up to 70% on your printer ink costs

PretonSaver Home is a new commercial software program which apparently can save you up to 70% of your printer ink costs by reducing the amount of pixels you print without destroying print quality. The idea of print optimisation is not new of course, we’ve featured the freeware GreenPrint before, but this is the first time I can remember a program supporting both inkjet and laser. The full version costs $34.99, so really only high volume print users will find this attractive,…

Yodal Dictation – dictating machines morph onto the mobile phone

Yodal provides real time dictation on mobile phones, using a dedicated recording program and the Amazon cloud for storage and forwarding. The idea is you install the software on your handset (currently only Blackberry but Windows Mobile and Symbian coming – wot no Android?) and when you want to dictate something just press go. Where Yodal differs from standard mobile phone dictation software is in the fact that the audio is streamed to the Net (actually Amazon S3 cloud servers) in real time, is…

Airport Control Simulator – fun game lets you manage landing planes

Airport Control Simulator is a direct rip from the most excellent iPhone and Android aircraft landing games Flight Control and Flying Aces, but done up for the PC. As you’d expect with the additional computing power, they’ve thrown in a bunch of extra features like dynamic weather, uprated real graphics and airports, complex landing manoeuvres and cool landing sounds. (!) Check out the free downloadable demo to get a taste of what you can do. The full game costs £19.99….

Lightroom 3 Beta – free beta test version of cool digital darkroom tool available

We love Lightroom we do, and so it’s nice to announce that you can play around with the new beta version of Lightroom 3 for free until the end of June. If you do a lot of digital photography and you’re looking for an excellent way to enhance and manage your images, then you should definitely check this out. Unfortunately the full version is far from freeware, but it is top quality-ware if you’re serious about your craft. Download link (free registration required)….

18 Wheels of Steel: American Long Haul – fun big truck game

Not freeware, but this 18 Wheels of Steel: American Long Haul game sure seems like fun. You own and drive your own big rig, hauling stuff around the country, trying to build your business and presumably stay one step ahead of chronic heartburn from roadside diner food. I played the demo and it’s fun. Could do with some better sound effects though. If you want the full experience, cough up $19.99.  Build your empire one rig at a time to…

The Red Ferret Product of the Year 2009: Software – Presto

Presto is the latest and most interesting version of Linux to target consumer computing. The weird thing is the fact that this Xandros made product actually runs on top of Windows, which for Linux purists is nothing short of heresy, but really the best way to encourage people to try a new operating system is to give them the chance to play with it on their own computer, free from the fear of ditching their comfort zone. The Presto install is fast and clean,…

T3D – turn your boring old 2D photos into 3D lovelies

The T3D program gives you the power to convert your boring old photos into glorious 3D. You’ll need a pair of special goggles in order to view the results properly, but the good news is the program can convert into a range of 3D formats, so you may not end up with a headache. There is a free version but it watermarks the images, so you’ll probably have to fork over the $39.95 if you want to do things properly….

BeMeBlackBox – the awesome car crash camera on your mobile phone

BeMeBlackBox is an extremely cool software program for Android mobile phones which turns your handset into a car crash camera. Just mount your phone onto the windscreen with the camera lens facing forward, fire up the program and it will automatically save the last x seconds of video (you set the time) if a) there’s a crash with a significant G force jolt or b) you press the big save button. It will then automatically upload the footage to YouTube….
