Jarte – free wordprocessor puts WordPad on steroids

Jarte is a new free word-processing program which uses WordPad as its engine and throws in a bunch of useful and cool features. The idea of using WordPad is not as naff as it sounds, since it means that most of the heavy lifting has already been done, and the developers can focus on adding in cool things like word count, tabbed documents and integrated spell check and thesaurus. Oh and it starts up really quickly! It’s definitely very usable,…

MozBackup fail – file size limit cripples large messagebase backups

I hate to do this to a cool Open Source product like MozBackup, but it really let me down the other day when I needed to transfer my email message base across from one machine to another. The backup file was fine, but contained only a small part of my data. Apparently the program can only cope with messagebases up to 4 GB in size. My messagebase is around 12 GB, hence the problem with only getting a portion of my…

Birdie – world’s first offline Twitter client with search?

My pal Fahim has just launched a new Twitter client with a twist. Birdie – oh ha ha dude – comes with a nifty interface, some optional and marginally annoying sound effects when Tweets arrive (you guessed it) and the ability to save all incoming stuff in a local database on your computer for offline perusal and manipulation. Now why would you need that, you ask? Well I can think of a lot of reasons why it might be cool to access…

Cool web design tools for ordinary people – why struggle when you can cruise?

Here’s a small round up of some cool web design tools that you might find useful, especially if you’re a little…ahem…web design challenged. Edicy. Super simple web site creator. Free and Pro versions. Super fast sign up means you can be editing in seconds. Templates are a bit average. Jimdo. Yet another site creator. Nice templates, and an easy editing interface are marred by an overly complex login process. Pretty output though. Free Web Page Headers. Collection of free Creative Commons licensed…

Dropbox – synch your files across Mac, Linux, PC and Web

Dropbox has been getting a whole heap of webplay recently, not least because it seems to work really well and really easily. The idea is you download the client and then drag files and folders you wish to share into your newly created ‘dropbox’ account. This then immediately makes them available to any computer via the web (or cloud if you wanna be trendy). Now there’s a bunch of file sharing, backup and sync services out there, but what makes…

Plushie – freeware for making your own plush toys

Plushie is an ‘interactive system that allows non-professional users to design their own original plush toys’. The free Java program is currently at a very early stage in development, but is nevertheless fascinating. I downloaded it to try and produce something and failed miserably, but the video shows what’s possible if you’re intelligent and diligent. [Via]  Furthermore, an arbitrary 3D model cannot necessarily be realized as a real plush toy, and the final sewn result can be very different from the original…

MSGTAG – freeware notification tool lets you know when your email has been read

MSGTAG is a freeware program that immediately and automatically lets you know when an email you’ve sent has been opened and read. OK, so you’re not absolutely certain it’s been read, but at least you know the message has been opened in an email client. It offers advantages over the default receipt feature of email clients because the recipient doesn’t have to click to agree to sending a receipt. It works with all the usual email clients, and is pretty…

Extensoft Free Video Converter – flexible, functional and competent

Extensoft’s Free Video Converter is a nice example of the genre. There are a load of these programs on the market, but I like the interface and speed of this one in particular. I also like the fact that you can combine multiple clips together in a rudimentary fashion (e.g. no transitions etc) and make a longer length movie out of clips. Great for your different digital camera footage bits. Oh, and it also creates nice web Flash video code…

iPhonesque – make your boring old cell phone look like an iPhone to the web

iPhonesque lets you change the user agent information of your Symbian powered cell phone’s web browser so you appear like a different handset. You can make yourself look like an iPhone, a Nokia N95 and so on. This can be very useful if you suspect you’re getting wrongly formatted content from broken sites. It also means you can feel mighty proud of yourself that you can access iPhone sites without having to pay those extortionate monthly fees. Oh and you’ll…

Parallel Kingdom – GPS role playing game for your cell phone

Parallel Kingdom is a free GPS based role playing game which pits you against the world. Or rather the virtual world. It’s currently only available to US players using the iPhone, Google Android or T-Mobile G1, so we’re not talking super viral quite yet. The idea is you wander around picking up treasure and fighting creatures and stuff based on your real world position. Am I the only one wondering when the first casualty will occur from someone not watching where they’re…
