5 Lean Mean Firefox Browser Alternatives…Plus A Real Stunner! [Daily Freeware]

Fed up with bloated, slow, buggy web browsers like Firefox? Yeah, me too. Just about every week now, I find myself wrestling with Firefox, and although I could switch to Chrome, it’s one Google step too far (I already owe too much of my life to the massive Google machine to be healthy). So for those who are in a similar predicament, I’ve brought together a sample of some alternative web browsers, plus one standout winner which I’ve switched to…

Clipboard Master makes your cut and paste tasks an absolute breeze [Daily Freeware]

If you count up the amount of time you spend cutting, copying and pasting information on your computer every day, you’d probably end up with a vast number of hours per year that would shock your hair white. I’m constantly copying web addresses, telephone numbers, search terms, form text, just a ton of stuff. In fact the other day I got so fed up with it, that I decided to try and make my life easier by finding a tool.

Lazesoft Recover My Password gets you out of trouble if you forget your Windows password [Daily Freeware]

The problem with security is you have to act all mature. That means you need to come up with clever, hard to crack passwords, you can’t write them down on a Post-it note on your monitor, and you’re definitely not supposed to forget them and get locked out of your own computer. The trouble is it happens…a lot.

Muffin Player Pro promises cloud storage and a free music player in one [Daily Freeware]

Two years ago we really slated Mufin MusicFinder Base as a sleazy ‘piece of garbage’ for pretending to be freeware when in fact it was a 7 day time limited trial. Well they must have heard us, because they’re now back in the market with a completely re-branded, genuinely free music player product, with some free cloud storage thrown in.

Bounce for Android means you’ll never be late again [Daily Freeware]

There are two types of people in this world. Those that worry about being late to an appointment, and those that don’t. I’ve always been one of the worriers, to the extent of being paranoid. That guy hovering outside the door an hour early for your party? Yeah, that’s me. The dude hanging around at the airport for 2 hours (‘in case security was really bad’), yep me again.

Follow Up: 10 Reasons Why I’m Done With Windows…6 Months Later (the news is not good for Microsoft)

Six months ago I published a provocatively titled post called 10 Reasons Why I’m Done With Windows which outlined how and why I converted my wife’s ancient laptop to Ubuntu Linux from Windows XP, when the latter crashed spectacularly. The piece attracted a LOT of comments from both Linux fans and detractors, ranging from ‘Your post reads like any Linux Fanboy rubbish. ‘ to ‘I had the exact same experience, and all my family members (wife and kids) use Linux without…

Security Kiss lets you browse the web anonymously, easily and for free [Daily Freeware]

There are times when it’s useful to pretend you come from another country when you’re online. Like you’re trying to watch a clip of a Jon Stewart show from outside the USA, or you’re trying to catch up on a BBC show from New York. There can be even more pressing reasons, such as avoiding arrest for surfing to a ‘freedom’ site if you live under a repressive regime in a developing country.

Microsoft Flight gets you off the couch and into the air in seconds [Daily Freeware]

Microsoft is no stranger to flight simulation games. I remember sitting down in awe many many years ago to play the first version of Flight Simulator on my then meaty desktop computer and being amazed by the quality of the simulation of flying. Yeah sure, the first few hours involved a lot of ‘failing to avoid the ground’, as Douglas Adams would say, but it was huge fun.

The Red Ferret Top 21 HTML5 Free Games [Daily Freeware]

Flash is dead, long live Flash. Well it may not be dead yet, but the writing’s on the wall, and the replacement has started to stretch its wings. HTML5 is an interactive global web standard which aims to deliver Flash type functionality in the browser without installing plugins, and the first games based around the technology are already appearing on the Web. One of the key advantages of moving to HTML5 for game development is the fact that each game…

Tweak Me! makes your Windows system faster and more stable [Daily Freeware]

We first covered Tweak Me! a couple of years ago, and my how it’s changed. The first thing is it’s been completely updated for the new versions of Windows, but the developer has also added in a bunch of new tools to tweak, over 180 of them in fact. It’s probably safe to say that you’ll find something here to suit your needs. As well as making the interface incredibly easy, the functionality is now bang up to date. For example…

Paper Karma lets you easily banish junk mail from your doormat with your phone [Daily Freeware]

It’s easy to hate junk mail, especially when it comes cascading in through your letterbox day after day after day. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was actually interesting stuff, but it’s usually just special offers for local plumbing services or yet another real estate firm trying to scam you into some deal or another. Tedious…and apparently unstoppable. Or is it?

Encrypt Facebook extension for Chrome could save your job – or your life [Daily Freeware]

Online privacy issues are a big deal nowadays, and for good reason. Companies like Facebook and the rest seem to think they can do what they like with our information, under cover of a flimsy veneer of privacy ethics. For most people this increasing intrusion is less than optimal, and for citizens of certain countries it can literally mean the difference between life and death. Even when we’re given the power to manage our privacy settings, there’s always a danger…

Speedfan freeware monitors your laptop to keep it cool [Daily Freeware]

The one fact they don’t tell you in the marketing blurb is the fact that laptops run hot. Very hot. In fact, as they get older, the accumulation of dust inside tends to restrict airflow and impair the running of the internal fans and so the laptop gets even hotter than it should. The eventual result can be a burnt out component or even a fire. I took a laptop in for repair a while back and the tech guys told me…

Firemin freeware promises to fix the Firefox memory problem and change your life [Daily Freeware]

I have this love hate relationship with Firefox at the moment, as regular readers will remember from previous posts. I’m addicted to the superb range of addons which can transform the browser into a veritable Swiss knife of value, but on the other hand the inability of the Mozilla team to fix long term bugs and speed the browser up is really –  REALLY –  frustrating. How hard can it be to sort out things like the memory leak after all…

Instinctiv lets you wirelessly stream media to your smartphone [Daily Freeware]

Today’s smartphones are great for a number of reasons. The least not being that they have a large capacity for holding your media. Of course, some of us have music and video libraries that can’t be contained by the flash storage on our portable devices. Thankfully wireless connections make it possible to keep your media on a computer, and stream it to your phone. All you need is the right software.
