React Messenger – Let your selfie get in on the conversation [Freeware]

We live in a fast-paced world filled with people that absolutely love to take pictures of themselves and share them with the world. They also love to chat… nonstop… all the time… as if the world would stop spinning if, for one second, they failed to stay in touch with others. What would happen if the power of instant messaging collided with the self-expression of the selfie?

Get 10 TB (!) of free online storage from China’s Tencent service

There’s one true fact in technology – you can never ever have too much storage space. It doesn’t matter if it’s a megabyte, gigabyte or petabyte, we’re going to fill it up with millions of photos of cute kittens and videos of our last birthday party that no-one will ever watch. Sensing this reality, the giant Chinese Internet service Tencent has decided to step up and make the world an offer it can’t refuse.

WeatherSignal Personal Weather Station – crowdsource your weather report from your phone [Freeware]

Everyone loves weather, especially when it’s nice. We’re not so fond of it when it’s surly and nasty, but hey, we’re only human, right? Up till now our relationship with the weather has also been hampered by a fairly random prediction system, but now the power of the smartphone is trying to change things for the better.

Mixbit – new app from the YouTube founders is designed to let you edit phone videos together

Apps like Vine and Video on Instagram have proved that people really seem to enjoy taking quick snippets of video with their phones and posting them online. The really strange thing is we, the unwashed public, seem to enjoy watching them as well, which really does blow the mind a little.

Rather Google Chrome Extension – for when you’d rather see something else in social media [FREEWARE]

Cats, along with a host of other topics, seem to have taken over the Internet at times, which is great… unless you don’t like cats or whatever else the current trending topic seems to be. Fortunately, you can now remove unwanted content from your social media streams without having to take the extreme step of unfriending/unfollowing someone.

Tin-Can – ultra cool Android messaging app doesn’t need Internet or a cellular connection [Freeware]

There’s a ton of smartphone messaging apps out there, but they all need some sort of Internet or cellular network connection to work. Which is all fine and dandy, but as we’ve seen with emergency situations in the past, these networks quickly break down when too many people try to access them, or the infrastructure is swept away, as the recent horrible events at the Boston Marathon demonstrate.

Nooly Micro Weather – the weather, your exact location, at that moment [Freeware]

Everyone needs to keep track of the weather, it’s just a fact of life. If you’re a farmer it’s obvious, if you’re a chef maybe not so (unless you’ve got to dash outside to grab some garlic from the market), but we all love monitoring conditions so we don’t risk encountering something nasty. OK, except for those of you in LA. But the problem is most weather services only give broad sweep forecasts over long periods.

Hola – free program lets you enjoy any website from any country [Freeware]

[UPDATE Nov 29th: this extension is now injecting adware. AVOID!!!] Every been frustrated by a country blocked website or video? Why do they even do that stuff? It’s stupid. We’ve featured a number of ways to get round the problem over the years, and thankfully the tools keep coming. Maybe one day the content owners will wake up, get a life and realize that the whole situation is ridiculous? Yeah and maybe pigs will perambulate across the sky.

Widelands – open source settlers game lets you build your civilization one humble plank at a time [Freeware]

You can never have too many opportunities to create your very own world, because let’s face it, the one we’ve got right now has definitely got a few rough edges. And there’s no shortage of developers trying to help us live out our fantasy, which is good news for narcissists across the globe.

OsmAnd Maps & Navigation – free GPS satellite navigation app removes data roaming expense [Freeware]

Where on earth would we all be without GPS satellite navigation systems eh? Stuck up the jungle without a paddle, that’s fer sure. Or lost in a village without road signs and no friendly police station. But one of the problems with using the leader of the pack, Google Maps, is the fact that it uses data to download the maps as you’re driving. Which can get very expensive if you’re using GPS while abroad and roaming charges kick in.

The Blockheads – the most scarily addictive game we’ve played for a long while [Freeware]

There are some games that just grab you by the throat the minute you start them up, and 4 hours later you realize it’s time to hit the sack because the sun is almost coming up. Of course video games appeal to different tastes as with everything, but sometimes we come across a title which really hits the spot for us, and this is one.

Scaremail – open source tool aims to disrupt government backed email snoopers [Freeware]

People have become rightly concerned about the level of government intrusion into our private matters, especially when it comes to phone calls, emails and web browsing habits. Most everyone agrees that a degree of security is necessary when dealing with mad people and their fanaticism, but the problem with unfettered surveillance is such license can be abused and misused in ways that were never intended. For example.

Carista – check and reset fault codes on your car with your phone [Freeware]

Ever since they added computer diagnostic systems into cars, thinks have got really complicated. Most of the time it’s impossible to tell what the heck is wrong with your car if an engine light flashes on the dash, and as for the little icons that come and go, it’s anyone’s guess if your vehicle is all right or just about to spontaneously explode.
