Open source alternatives – keeping it real in a sea full of commercial proprietary

The most disturbing thing about the current Web 2.0 environment is just how much of our user data is owned by closed shop companies, who basically can do what they like with it. The fact is we’re slowly returning to a walled garden world – Facebook as the new AOL? Very worrying, as this post demonstrates. So it’s nice to know there are people trying to provide more open, free and non restrictive alternatives for us to use if necessary. Keep an eye…

Divvyshot – cool online photo album creator based around events

Divvyshot is a new online photo album which takes a different approach to sharing your photos. Everything is based around events, and once an event is created, anyone can add their own images to the site and have them displayed as part of the occasion. It may seem obvious, but this is something that I haven’t seen done properly in the past, this kind of thing is generally just an add-on feature which you can use. By putting event sharing first,…

How to do Everything in Google Buzz (including turn it off)

How to do Everything in Google Buzz (including turn it off). Typically valuable article from Gina Trapani on the new wunderkind from the big G. Buzz is predictably getting some buzz, and this piece helps to put it all into a bit of context. Will the service be useful? Time tells all, dear reader. Right now I think it has more instant appeal than Google Wave, but who knows in the long term?  I see Buzz being useful for more personal, direct…

The Meaning of Color – a must-keep explanation of the impact of color in design

The Meaning of Color is an absolutely brilliant post (the first of three) from Smashing Magazine which looks at the meaning of color in terms of design. It comes with some great practical examples of the use of color in web design. If you’re involved in design or even just interested, then you really need to bookmark this and keep it for permanent reference.  Outside the western world, red has different associations. For example, in China, red is the color…

15 to Fame – grab your 15 minutes of fame now, before it’s too late

15 to Fame is an interesting little take on Warhol’s claim that one day we’ll all be famous for 15 minutes. The site features a single YouTube video on the front page which anyone can use to show off their skillz and gain notoriety. Of course you’ll need to wait until the site gets a million visitors a day to really make it fly, but hey…stranger things have LOLCatz happened. [one hint guys: zero sign-up needed!]  15tofame is the best place…

6Rounds – online meetings get some fun style glitter

They’re pitching 6Rounds as a ‘social webcam experience’, which basically means you get to watch each other with live video while indulging in games, social events or other online activities. Sharing the moment, see? I guess it’s a reasonable supposition, but you can’t help feeling that all this trendy social engagement would be so much more meaningful if you could just leave the house occasionally and become less remote and more in-yer-face. Anyway, interesting idea.  6rounds is a live meeting…

YouTube does Hulu – and so the seventh dimension pops into existence…

Wow, colour me late to the party, but YouTube now does television and movies? No way! Way? Wow! Not just cheesy Net knock-offs either, but also fave mainstream TV stuff like The IT Crowd, Fawlty Towers and Wallace & Gromit. Sure the video quality ain’t comparable to Voddler or regular broadcast, but hey, it’s free and stuff. And there are movies too. Wow again. Tags: youtube, movies, hulu
