Yuuguu – file and desktop sharing goes cross platform

Yuuguu is a screen share, desktop application share and IM freeware tool which is one of the only programs of its type that’s available for both Mac and PC. Which is very interesting. It works OK, but the lag is horrific, which makes any form of remote control almost impossible. And that’s on fast broadband connections. Definitely one to watch though, if they can get the speed issues worked out it could be excellent.  Yuuguu is a clever little tool that…

Using GMail as your free SMTP server – send email easily from anywhere

How to use Google Mail as a free SMTP server. Why? Well if you travel a lot and log on to different ISPs, this trick saves you having to reset your SMTP server in Outlook Express each time. Just set it and forget it and you can send email from any guest ISP, wireless or wired. Nice tip.  You can make this setup your default account, and it will always be used. You regular ISP mail will come in as…

Everystockphoto – 1 million free photos

EveryStockPhoto.com is an image search engine which has catalogued over 1 million free photos from places like Flickr and Stock Xchang. These general purpose image sources are pretty useful, although you really only find the ‘quality’ shots from the more specialised services, so be aware that you tend to get what you pay for. That saying, places like Stockxpert are pretty awesome for design and illustration stuff.  We are now searching over one million free photos! We have been adding…

I Let You – set up your own personal Netflix online store

I Let You (Iletyou.com) is a pretty bold adventure in user generated content. It basically lets anyone set up a Netflix type video and game rental store for free, using their own stock and charging their own prices. The idea is that many people have huge collections of discs which they  can profit from, either via renting out or exchanging within the community. It’s brave all right, if only because many pundits predict that on-demand movies and games will eventually…

Imagini – discover yourself and others using images

Imagini is a cool and interesting new service that lets you build a personal profile through your relationship with images. Train the system with your choice of images and then find others with similar tastes. The Ferret is closest to a user called grnbc, with a 61% shared taste in images. Does that mean we could become bestest friends? Your guess is as good as mine. Still, definitely fun, and who knows, it could end up as quite a happy social network. …

My Hourly Rate Calculator – the scary freelancer tool

The Freelance Rate Calculator is one scary tool. Ostensibly designed to help freelancers calculate their optimum fee rate, what it actually does is point out just how stupidly little you’re charging and how you’ll be bankrupt in a fortnight, no question. For some strange reason though, that never happens, which is a real mystery. Anyhoo, definitely one to put into the armoury, only to be taken out on full moon nights. What is Web 2.0? – a sensible attempt at definition

There’s a bunch of ‘pundits’ out there trying to make sense of this mysterious Web 2.0 malarky, but this Web 2.0 definition is actually one that I think actually works well. It’s not too complex, vague or oblique and it sums up some of the important meta-issues that lie behind the marketing fluff. Bookmark it for your next dinner party chat.  “But that’s not fair!” you may be protesting.” Everyone knows what it is. It’s about social networking, user-generated content,…

Gtalk2VoIP – IM gets SIP and PSTN power

Gtalk2VoIP is a totally fascinating service which links together IM services like Google Talk, MSN and Yahoo! Messenger with SIP phones and ordinary landlines and lets you make voice calls between them all. What makes this different is that everything is controlled from your instant messenger program of choice, which is a pretty cool way of handling things. The help and setup interface is still a little too…ahem…rustic for my liking, but the concept looks great and they have done a plug-in for Google…

Divshare – free file storage with a twist

The guys at DivShare sent me notification of their new free file hosting service a while back which to be honest got a bit of a ho-hum from me. Too many such services, not enough time. And as far as I know most of them have their problems. We recently tried to use a couple – box.net was one – to share a file and they both failed miserably, just didn’t work. In the end we used yousendit.com which did work….

Netvibes2Go – your cool stuff now on your phone

Netvibes2Go is the latest feature to come out of the rather excellent Netvibes labs. Just set up a tab called ‘mobile’, populate it with your preferred content including email services, RSS feeds, etc and then navigate to http://m.netvibes.com to get full access to it all on your mobile phone or device. Just tried it with my Nokia N800 and it works beautifully. For those of you who don’t know what Netvibes is, try it out, it’s superb. Tags: netvibes, mobile+phone
