Open Designs – more Open Source web templates

Open Designs. Well if the quality of their web site is anything to go by, this new portal for free Open Source web design templates is going to be a fabulous resource once it gets going in earnest. At the moment there are just under 200 designs on the site, and there are some really nice ones on the front page. Check it out.  Our goal is to create a community owned and managed site, where users can share their free website…

SofaTube

SofaTube is a neat little web application that lets you browse and watch videos from YouTube and Revver on your television set. As long as there’s an internet connected computer attached of course. Designed for the 10 foot, rather than the 2 foot experience see? Bigger fonts, boxes, navigation. Might be a bit sucky watching YouTube sized videos on a glorious 42” HD plasma though, eh? Still, this is definitely a bit of a subversive application when you really think about it.  SofaTube…

Hobo – the ultra fast web app builder for Rails

Hobo is a super fast web app builder for Ruby on Rails which has just been launched by my good friend Tom Locke. It’s cool because it automates a lot of the Rails stuff, while at the same time offering enough power and flexibility to cope with any kind of customisation or styling that you may need. The screencast – which shows a complete classified advertising web application being built in 5 minutes – explains it a lot better than I can, and I…

Free to post and provides location based search. Uphill battle beating off Craigslist though, so good luck guys.  Myzoox is a community of people providing services to the world and selling their skills and knowledge as independent contractors. Whether you are seeking to break the bondage of employment or simply…

Humble Voice – artist community done right

Humble Voice. Somewhere deep in my breast a small voice is shouting, ‘the world can’t support any more social networking sites, really it can’t’, but I’m ignoring it because I really like this site. It’s a meta-artist community site for musicians, photographers, writers and suchlike, with a beautifully clean and sensible design. It also has a huge set of neat features which are ridiculously easy to understand and use. But one word, guys. Try and realise that a FAQ which is…

Flippid – buy or sell stuff instantly

Flippid. Hmm…this online buying and selling service could be a real rival for eBay if it gets traction. The idea is that you post stuff for sale, or that you want, and the system matches one to the other. Sounds simple, but the matching technology needs to be pretty clever to make sure that buyers and sellers find each other fast. Once a match has been made you are notified by email and can choose to trade or not. Fees payable on sale…

xRez – extreme high resolution images

xRez is a collection of insanely high resolution panoramic images in various categories covering natural and urban subjects. If you’re into zooming down into a gigapixel image to look up a person’s nostrils, then this is for you. Well OK, we exaggerate a tad. Awesome project though.  xRez is a consortium of digital artists committed to exploring new creative opportunites made available by the advent of extremely high-resolution gigapixel digital photography. We believe this is clearly the next revolution in photography,…

I Like Totally Love It – Digg for gadgets. Genius!

I Like Totally Love It. Sometimes it’s the simple ones that do it for you, and this one is superb. Rather than load you down with reviews, fancy navigation and frills you don’t need, these guys (a bunch of students, no less) have come up with a genius play – a Digg for gadgets. You register for free, submit your gadget recommendation and the community votes for it to get to the front page. Sure there are similar out there, but this is the…

Ajax13 Web Appliction Suite – online office

Ajax13. I’ve talked about this free suite of web applications before, but it’s worth a second mention, if only because they’re beginning to flesh out the range of apps nicely. It’s still a product shy of a business model, but hey, you can’t shoot them for trying. Their main problem is that people do not immediately think Web when they want to create a document or produce a presentation. They think Microsoft. So how do you get over that ‘top of mind’ problem…

Vyew – cool, free desktop sharing and collaboration

Vyew.Free desktop sharing and collaboration via your browser. It uses Java and works quite well as far as I can tell, although I haven’t pushed it in a real heavyweight test yet. Worth a look anyway.  Vyew is a FREE web conferencing and collaboration platform that enables shared visual communication from any browser. Vyew provides a real-time workspace through which web users can share ideas and work together. Vyew users can collaboratively create Microsoft PowerPoint-like pages by intermixing Microsoft Office and…

Sizeeasy – just how big is that gadget?

Sizeeasy. Very cool little Rails application from Stephen Butterworth that lets you view, compare and evaluate product sizes in full 3D. No more scrabbling around for a ruler to do a rough approximation of a new cell phone or MP3 player, now you can see exactly how it compares to your existing model. Great for the pocket challenged and a superb example of a simple app that offers real value.  Sizeasy allows you to compare dimensions of items you find described on…

TenHunt – online scavenger hunt

TenHunt is an online scavenger hunt. You sign up, get questions and clues, visit websites, grab answers and if you’re quicker than everyone else, you win prizes. It’s a naked website marketing/promotion play, but hey, it’s fun and you could even win a Nintendo, iPod etc.  At the official start time of a particular TenHunt, all players will be able to start that TenHunt by logging into the player’s backend. You will be greeted with the first question out of 10. That question…
