Gizmo Call – browser based free phone calls

Gizmo Call is offering free calls to landlines or mobile phones around the world. Just type the phone number in the box and press call (the first time you use it, a browser plug-in will be installed). Calls limited to 10 minutes per day and there appears to be a small print $5.00 limit on the page, so it looks like another one of Michael Robertson’s marketing schemes. Still an interesting idea though. Tags: voip, internet+phone

Unyte – free desktop sharing for Skype

Unyte is a pretty cool desktop sharing plug-in for Skype. Just download, install and you’ve got 1:1 sharing of your Windows desktop, applications and tea cups (we wish!). We wrote about this when it launched beta in January, but now it’s released properly, and it actually does work well. And with hardly any lag etc. Better still, they have priced it really aggressively. Free for 1:1 limited view sharing, and just $30 a year for 1:1 shared control access. Unfortunately there’s…

Senduit – instant file sharing

Senduit. Beautifully minimal interface masks a lovely little file sharing application. Set an expiry time, upload your file and distribute the link to whoever you want. Perfect. If only the filesize limit was larger than a paltry 100 MB (hey, is it 1997?)  Senduit’s service provides users with the ability to upload a file via HTTP-Protocol and receive a custom URL address to download the file from Senduit’s servers. This address can be shared by the user freely and can be…

DIY Solar Power Kit – juice up your laptop for $180

The DIY Portable Solar Power Kit. Pretty clever. You need to know how to channel geo-thermal isotopes and downgrade fissionable Deuterium, but hey how hard can it be? Oh all right, just kidding. This is definitely worth a bookmark.  This kit weighs about 2 lbs, costs $180, and will power my Macbook for 1.75 hours (1.83ghz, browsing the web and checking email via Airport Extreme, bluetooth off, screen brightness about 70%) with a little more than 5 hours of good sun…It’s great for…

LibriVox – more free audiobooks

LibriVox is another free audiobooks site which looks quite nice. You can also volunteer to read some public domain works into the library for them. It’s very Open Source, very community. Deserves to get an audience, so do take a look.  LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the net (via podcast and catalog). 160 + online file storage services – file fetish

Listable now has a list of some 160 + online file storage services. That’s a lot of files and a lot of competition in one small market. The trouble is that few people will trust their precious data to a small company which could go belly up next week, so these tiny services are probably doomed as soon as Google offers its own version for real.
