SimCam – great way to get the best out of your digital camera

SimCam is a great online tool which lets you play around with those important features of a digital camera which you may never have really understood, and get an idea of how they affect your photos. Things like aperture, shutter speed, film speed etc. What’s really cool is the fact that you get to see a realtime picture which changes as you alter settings, so you really learn how to use the manual controls. And remember kiddies, at the end of the…

CD/DVD Facts – how to choose your archive media

How to Choose CD/DVD Archival Media. A superb blog post and huge 4 month long comment thread which will tell you just about everything you need to know on the robustness, suitability and reliability of optical discs for long term archive purposes. Hint: don’t trust your most precious data to these discs if you can help it, but if you do, look for one of the handful of good brands. Oh and do check out the DVDisaster Project.  To begin with, I do not recommend CD-RW,…

Finetune – make your own radio station

Finetune is an interesting new online music station service. You create playlists and combine them with those of others to make up a station. There’s also the inevitable community cum recommendation cum tag thread running through it all, but for some reason it’s quite an interesting thing to play around with. I’m not sure how much extra it gives over something like Pandora, which may not have as many customisation options, but lets you listen to music in your taste-band just as…

Torrent Finder and uTorrent – perfect search harmony

I would say that the combination of the Torrent Finder meta search engine and uTorrent provides just about the best BitTorrent search combination of the moment. Fast comprehensive search plus a tiny but powerful client. Oh, and you can add Torrent Finder to your Firefox search bar. Nice. Tags: bittorrent, bittorrent+search

MapMsg – send someone a Google map message

MapMsg. Clever Google Maps mashup which lets you send a message via a location of your choice. The tech looks pretty cool, and the idea is pretty nifty, so check it out and make someone happy.  “Reliable, proven technology” Signalling using land marks is an ancient form of communication. Compare this to e-mail, hardly available for half a century and already collapsing by spam. “Unique and personal” Forget about boring e-cards with flashy animations. Instead, send a unique satellite-visible message,…

Smart2Go – free navigation system for 150 countries

Wow, Nokia has just released a free GPS navigation and map system which provides free routing for 150 countries on a plethora – say it again, plethora – of devices, ranging from mobile phones to handheld computers. You download the Smart2Go application first and then select and download the maps you want separately. It’s not a cut down offer either, these are full blown street level maps with 15 million points of interest included overall. It’s an amazing announcement, if only because it will open…

IMified – web applications via IM

IMified is a great little free application which merges your choice of favourite instant messenger with various web applications. So for instance you can connect use your 30Boxes organiser/calendar application with MSN or AIM, and when you want to add a reminder or calendar date just IM to the application rather than logging in etc. Super idea and great for using on mobile phones too.  WHY SHOULD I USE IT? Because you shouldn’t have to launch your browser to add…

Yotophoto is a specialist image search engine with an index of more than a quarter of a million Creative Commons, Public Domain, GNU FDL and other copyleft images from places like Flickr, Morguefile, sxc.hu etc. Great resource if you’re looking for a meta search facility for pictures. These are images that are either in the Public Domain or released under generous Creative Commons, GNU FDL or similar licenses…Our goal is…

OldVersion – because new software versions sometimes suck

OldVersion.com is an archive of older versions of popular software packages, for those times when a newer version simply won’t work for you. I love the idea of a history machine for programs, especially since new version bloat often results in an inferior product. Definitely worth a bookmark.  Sometimes upgrading to a newer version can be a good thing. Other times, your computer may not be compatible with the new version, the new version is bloated, or all the options you liked…

Zuula Search – good effort

Zuula Search actually doesn’t look half bad, especially since it’s just giving you the standard search engine results in a fancier tabbed layout. Quite a nice design and a few extra features (like automatically stored recent searches) make it a cut above the usual search clones.   * How is Zuula different from a “meta” search engine? Zuula allows you to browse through your search results from the top search engines individually, while a meta search engine uses an algorithm…

Wipbox – make your online ads shine

Wipbox. A new service to let you create cool online adverts for eBay and other places. In some ways it’s kind of like vFlyer, but more online maybe. The research and a few other bits were broken when I tried to play around, but nonetheless it’s definitely still worth a look-see.  WipBox enables sellers to create better, richer listings through deeper knowledge gathering and better preparation. Users can learn which categories and for how much they should list items based on…

Sample Swap – free audio samples for download

Sample Swap. Free ‘professional quality’ audio samples for downloading. Over 7000 samples available and there’s a nice Flash audition feature too.  Are these sounds royalty-free? Can I use them in a commercial arrangement? In two words: Not necessarily. Our policy is to require that members only upload original sounds that they are giving up into the public domain, but there’s no way for us to be sure that 100% of the sounds on this site are free and clear from any…
