FireShot – super cool screenshot grabber for your browser

FireShot is a very cool freeware plug-in for Firefox that lets you grab screenshots of web sites quick and easy like. There’s a whole heap of things you can do with your screen grab, like annotate, draw and send via email but the single most important feature is the fact that you can grab a whole site, not just the part that’s visible at the time. This is SO useful that it’s worth the installation on its own. So there.  Unlike…

The Music Collection Generator – five tools for creating a great free music collection

The music industry wants to tax us for using our Internet connection? How quaint. Wasn’t there a protest about that sort of thing a while back? Oh yes, ‘no taxation without representation.’ That’s it. Anyhoo, while they’re trying desperately to retrieve a dead and gone business model, teh internets is moving on apace as ever. Here’s a set of tools which are perfect for building (or recreating even) your perfect music collection. First off you’ll need the most excellent Orbit Downloader. This freeware program…

Clownsuits – search tools for hard to find files and stuff

Apparently there is now a growing class of online search tools called clownsuits. What are they? Search scripts that do an advanced Google search using specific parameters. Like Google Hacks but online. It’s basically a way to find ‘deep’ or ‘invisible’ web material like files and multimedia that generic searches miss. These tools are invariably nothing more than simple scripts which contain pointers to either specific file storage areas like FTP folders, or hosts like Rapidshare or social networks like MySpace. As with…

Video Flip and Rotate – free video tweaking software quickly and cleanly puts things right

t Video Flip and Rotate. Nice little freeware tool that helps you beat the rotated video blues you get when using those tiny phone or digicam video cameras. It’ll handle the normal .avi and .mpg formats and works fast and cleanly. Small files convert quickly and the file size doesn’t grow hugely (around 24% which is reasonable considering). All in all one of those tools that could turn out indispensable one day. By the way, one new thing I really…

Secunia PSI – excellent freeware program scans, locates and patches potential security risks in your applications

Secunia PSI. Excellent freeware package scans your computer and locates old and vulnerable programs which should be updated and if necessary patches them for you automatically. The program will also flag end-of-life products which may contain security vulnerabilities so you can decide whether to keep or delete them from your hard drive. This is a superb tool for tracking potential security problems on your machine if, like me, you install a lot of different software programs, so this immediately goes into my full-time toolbox.  …

New Gray-Hoverman Super Antenna – television antenna geeks release radical new Open Source design

So a bunch of television antenna heads have come up with a massively improved design for a UHF antenna which they say blows away current designs. What’s more they’ve gone and released the design for this New Gray-Hoverman Super Antenna via a GPL license so it’s free for all. Now that’s what we call community action. [via Slashdot]  “Boy, this antenna is hot. I finally got it pointed right. After I did a search for channels, I got 23 digital channels, and this is…

MJPEG Surveillance – cool free motion sensing webcam security program

MJPEG Surveillance. Nice free security webcam program comes with motion sensing technology which starts the recording when it senses movement in any particular area of the room. It can handle multiple cameras and can convert the JPEG file stream into a proper WMV, DivX or MPEG4 video clip. Lots of other features too, including video editing and auto video recycling which records over the oldest videos first (useful for keeping hard disk space under control).  My best motion detection algorithm so…
