POLITE Cycle Waistcoat – protect yourself from crazy car drivers with this cool cycling vest

There’s more than one way to keep safe on the roads if you’re a cyclist, so it pays to use them all if you can. Sure bright lights, high visibility clothing and a very loud horn will help, but what about throwing in a little bit of fun psychology as well?

Yondr – new service promises an end to fan phone videos at concerts

If you’re looking for a song on YouTube, chances are you’ll find at least 50 blurry videos captured by cell phones at a concert and posted by fans. If you go to a show it’s likely you’ll see a sea of cell phone screens pointed at the stage by people who are clearly more interested in videoing than engaging in the performance right then and there. Well now there’s a company which is looking to change that, and it’s bound…

#X – it can wait, the pledge against texting and driving

We love it when clever people come up with clever uses of basic technology, and this is one of those cases. The #X campaign has a very simple, but powerful message – don’t text while you drive. There are more teenage road deaths caused by texting while driving than anything else, so this is a hugely valuable initiative. And it’s simple to do.

Envelope X-Ray Spray – it’s not just computers that can get hacked, you know

With all the incessant focus on computer hacking, banks, passwords, credit cards and all that stuff, it’s easy to forget that real spies don’t just rely on cracking our digital domains. They also spend a lot of time delving into our trash cans, digging out old acquaintances and even snooping on our mail.

Ghost Chilli Growing Kit – the hottest pepper in the world comes to your windowsill, and good luck with that…

There are chilli peppers and then there are chilli peppers, and the Bhut Jolokia, or Ghost Chilli is the world’s hottest, at least according to the Guinness Book of Records. It’s so hot that villagers in India apparently use it smeared on fence posts to keep the elephants away. We’re talking ten times hotter than a habanero chilli. Get the idea?

Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 Camera Phone – the Android smartphone that’s also a 4K camera, things just got real…

Every so often in tech a new product arrives on the market which doesn’t quite make sense, but is still rather cool. These products often don’t find a mass market, but what they do is point the way to a future iteration which will eventually indeed make waves, and possibly even create a new market segment. The new Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 Smart Camera [original] is just such a product.

Cocoon Hanging Tent – cool tree house just needs a hook and a branch

Some things instantly look like fun for all, and this Cocoon Hanging Tent is one. C’mon, who wouldn’t want to climb into this puppy and swing back and forth while reading P.G. Wodehouse (who?), sipping iced chamomile tea and listening to some cool summer sounds . But maybe we’re being silly?

Do This ASAP – free online service offers a real human servant to do stuff for you

Almost since the dawn of the Interwebs people have been trying to improve search. They’ve tried graphical search engines, text ones, multilingual, niche topics, you name it and someone has come up with an idea and a project. Now the latest is a kind of combination of an online concierge service and Yahoo Answers, neither of which ideas are new, but who knows, maybe this one will strike the cord?

Amazon Pilot Season – do crowdsourced viewer votes point to the future of primetime television services?

If there’s one thing that demonstrates how far and how fast entertainment has moved since the early days of primetime, we really need look no further than the Amazon Pilot Season. Now in it’s third year, this unlikely collaboration between a bookseller, the Internet and faux television, presents the kind of audience participation that Nielsen ratings can only dream about. The idea is for us to view the pilots, and vote on which ones we want to see made into…

Motoped – the DIY cross between a mountain bike and a moped

When is a motorbike not a motorbike? When it’s a self-build kit which lets you use standard mountain bike forks, wheels, brakes and such, and combine them with a specially developed frame which can hold a small four stroke motor. The result is something which you can cycle when it suits you, and will also give more than 100 mpg from the 50cc motor version when motoring.
