TreeNation – a tree community just made for hugging

TreeNation. It’s colourful, trendy, ever so sincere and wants you to cough up some money to plant trees, lots of trees. Take one dash Facebook, one dash Greenpeace and one dash IPO fodder and you’ve got this site down pat. Get a free tree for every 10 friends you sign up to the service. Spooky self assembling robot – good grief, didn’t these guys see Terminator 2…?

Where’s the Really Scary tag when you need it? This spooky self assembling robot is just about the freakiest thing you’ll see today. The researcher from Penn U. kicks the thing to bits and it then spends the next few minutes locating and re-assembling the disjointed parts. Like a creepy, metallic slow-mo caterpillar. I mean c’mon, didn’t we learn our lessons from the T-1000? Are we that stupid, people? Tags: terminator, we’re+all+doomed, spooky+self+assembing+robot, robotics

VizionWare Hi-Wirez Powered HDMI Cable – super cable promises ultra quality resolution over long distances

The Vizionware Hi-Wirez HDMI Cable is a powered uber cable that incorporates a bunch of smart technology bits to optimise your video signal over long distances. Reduced noise, optimised signals and lossless data transfer are just some of the terms that make us shudder with excitement. The price of $369.00 for 5 meters is, however, very scary.  It has a proprietary silicone core technology enhancing fidelity between source and display. Each connector has a patent pending embedded data chip that ensures lossless video…

ProCon – unbiased information on controversial topics

ProCon.org is a non-profit service which aims to present the facts on controversial subjects in a pro/con way. The idea is to strip away the mess of opinion, uninformed rhetoric and other biases which cloud the core issues of a subject and allow the reader to make up their own mind based on fact. It’s a laudable project, especially in view of the decreasing veracity of the mainstream media and the unproven diligence of web commentators, so go, pro, go….

Is eBay in trouble? – a tale of rampant scammers and woeful tech support on venerable auction site

Very interesting article on The Consumerist about the increasing difficulty of selling a laptop computer on eBay without it being ‘won’ by Nigerian scammers. It looks as though eBay is suffering from a growing problem in terms of fraud and criminal activity. The worst aspect of the whole sorry tale is the pathetic user support this chap received from what is supposed to be one of the wealthiest web sites in the world. If that’s all they can offer, then things will continue going…

Sony XEL-1 OLED Television – sparkling new tech is apparently a short lived beauty?

A new report out from Display Search suggests that Sony’s groundbreaking new OLED display television, the XEL-1, may have a significantly lower lifespan than the manufacturer claims. We’re talking 17,000 hours as against 60,000 hours for a typical LCD or plasma flat screen TV. The report also says that the product suffers from what it calls ‘differential aging’, with differing degradation rates for each of the primary colours. Oh and the screen doesn’t look so bright in sunnier conditions. Still, at least the technology is…

BigScreenLive – the web browser for computer-phobics

BigScreenLive is a web browser for those who prefer simple to complex. The developers are billing it as a browser for ‘families’ (i.e. old people) but I reckon it has value as something that a lot of computer intimidated folk would like to use in place of the disparate tools we currently have for accessing digital content. The front screen interface is clear and uncluttered and offers access to the most common ‘family’ tasks like photos, , shopping and games…

WordHustler – the automated online personal assistant for writers

WordHustler is a really interesting new online application created by a couple of writers for writers. The idea is that writing is hard enough, without all the hassle of having to deal with markets and submissions, so they’re trying to take all that stuff away. The normal process of submitting your prose usually revolves around lots of photocopying, stamp licking and market research, which WordHustler claims to do for you. So all you have to do is focus on writing that…

The Ferret is now Twitter plated – we succumb to hype in the name of research and goodwill

After watching in astonishment the unprecedented amount of hype accorded to Twitter – gee guys it’s just a fancy form of broadcast SMS ain’t it? – we’ve succumbed and signed up for a Red Ferret service. Here’s the link to subscribe to our Tweets (yuck!) so knock yourself out (there’s also a permanent link on the top right sidebar). Sometimes it’s hard to be a muppet y’know. Sigh! XPLite is a software utility which lets you tweak Windows XP to create the operating system you want. Remove components, strip out useless features and reduce your operating system footprint down to a pretty cool level. They’re talking about squeezing XP into around 300MB (down from gigabytes) which is pretty impressive. Bet it’s fast too. $39.95.  The latest developments in XPLite now see clean installations of Windows XP in under 350MB and Windows 2000 approaching less than 200 MB (excluding paging file)…

Apple lawyers exterminate iPhone clone sellers – Jobs and Gates now BFF?

[photo] Apple lawyers have apparently been busy for the past few months destroying iPhone clone sellers in the UK who have been supplying copycat Chinese iPhones over the Internet. One casualty, which is now all but bankrupt, is Digital Playworld which received the full frontal assault of an army of Apple legal Rottweilers who, in the words of Simon Rimmer, Digital Playworld’s managing director, ‘came at me all guns blazing, big bully boy tactics’. It seems that Mr Jobs’ henchmen were not best…
