LoseLose – insane computer game trashes your computer as you play

LoseLose is an absolutely insane free computer game which trashes your computer as you play. The thing works by deleting a random file on your hard disk every time you zap an alien craft. What’s more if the player’s ship is destroyed, then a program file is deleted. Or something. I’m still reeling from the first part of the proposition. For serious adrenaline junkie masochists only I’m thinking.  Lose/Lose is a video-game with real life consequences. Each alien in the game…

About:Me – cool Firefox add-on provides charts of your browsing habits

About:Me is a new Firefox add-on which provides a bunch of charts and graphs showing your web browsing habits. If you want to know exactly why you got zero work done yesterday, just type ‘about:me’ into your Firefox address box and watch in stupified glory as graphs detailing 14 hours of Reddit and Hacker News flash onto your screen. Awe inspiring.  The goal of the about:me page is to give you a more interesting view of statistics about your browser usage. The…

DriverMax – cool freeware keeps your computer drivers up to date with style

DriverMax is a free Windows driver updating program which does it right. There are a few of these services out there, but this is the first I’ve come across which combines online and offline support with such effectiveness. The idea is you download the software to run a scan of your machine, after which you can choose to update any old drivers found on your system. The clever part is the fact that the service uses crowdsourced driver files from the…

HLP Free Memory Optimizer – keep your computer memory optimized and win

The HLP Free Memory Optimizer keeps your computer humming along at a fair old clip, guv, by…um…optimizing your computer’s memory. You know, monitoring RAM usage, clearing unused registers, swapping stuff out to the paging file etc etc. Stuff you’d normally need a masters in computer science to cope with, can now be done by someone with a law degree. I mean how weird is that? And it’s free. Miracle.  HLP Free Memory Optimizer monitors your system in the background and…

Mobipocket Creator – make your own eBooks for free

Mobipocket Creator is a freeware program which will let you create your own eBooks out of any old stuff you have lying around. You know, HTML, text, .doc or PDF files, that sort of thing. Just fire up the program, dump your files into the right place and bingo, out comes a fully formed eBook. OK, so it’s not quite that simple, but you get the idea. Manic Time – free program automatically tracks your computer usage

Manic Time is a free program which automatically logs your computer activity and gives you a breakdown of how you spend your time. It’s not a new idea, we first covered Rescue Time way back in 2007, but this is an interesting take on the subject. You can tag your activities to make them easier to track, and you get lovely coloured charts to prove that you’re really spending a huge amount of time working and not goofing off on Reddit,…

Viewer 2 is an innovative free image viewer which lets you tag, view and manipulate photos via a clever interface. Instead of relying on clunky formatted viewing, the program provides a wide range of options, including viewing by folder, time and tags. The real clever bit lies in how simple it is to zoom in and out of your collection, and arrange them into different groupings on the fly. It’s hard to explain in text, so take a look at the…

Sun VirtualBox – cool freeware lets you run multiple operating systems on your computer

I’ve been playing with the free open source Sun VirtualBox software for the past few weeks and it’s awesome. If you have ever wanted to run a ‘proper’ full blown Linux installation on your Windows machine without the hassle of dual booting, then this is the perfect method. Set up is a breeze, and my installation of Ubuntu into a Windows box went without a hitch. The only weird thing was the fact that at first Ubuntu is only loaded…

ChromePlus – the super souped up Google Chrome

Chrome Plus is the Google Chrome web browser on steroids. Well to be more precise it’s Chrome with a nice set of added grooviness, like mouse gestures, IE tab and a very cool super drag feature which gives you instant search and link opening just by dragging a block of text or link. Nice. It’s based on the open source Chromium engine, is super fast to install, and the tabbed functionality and gestures make it a real joy to use…
