Use MakeMKV to transfer your old DVDs to your phone or portable player [Freeware]

If you’re like me, you’ve probably got an ageing collection of old DVD movies that are sitting on a shelf somewhere, waiting to be thrown out or ‘archived’ to the attic one day during a cleanup. In amongst them are some really cool movies though eh, wouldn’t it be great to be able to digitize them to your phone, computer or other player so you can watch them again when the mood suits? Well now you can!

JetClean is the best Windows power utility we’ve ever seen [Freeware]

Over the years we’ve reported on a bunch of free utility programs which will tweak, optimize and turbo-charge your Windows PC. Each of the programs we’ve recommended has offered a specialisation, such as GameBooster for speeding up the machine when you want to play games, or CCleaner for tidying up redundant files. Now there’s a new and very cool kid on the block, which provides a more generalist approach by combining all the major tweaks in one very sophisticated package.

GO Launcher EX completely customises the look and feel of your Android phone [Freeware]

One of the most powerful features of the Android operating system, which many people don’t know, is the fact that you’re not restricted to the user interface that your mobile provider embeds on your handset. Unlike certain other systems…cough…iOS…cough… Android gives you the flexibility to tweak and customise everything from the Home screen to the icons and beyond. Ultimately, of course, you can do away with the stock system and replace it completely with a new version of your choosing, like the…

ZoneAlarm Free AntiVirus + Firewall protects your PC like a mother hen [Freeware]

Way back in the day ZoneAlarm set the computer security world alight with a cool, very powerful personal firewall product which defined the world of Windows PC safety for years. Then the company seemed to lose its way, the technology started to wilt, and their products disappeared from popular use as other products took over. Well they’re back.

Beat The Traffic keeps you out of jams on your commute [Freeware]

Whatever happened to remote teleworking? They promised us a life of leisure with no commuting, more time with the dog, less stress and all round roses and champagne. Well maybe I’m missing something, but the roads still look massively jammed up to me, and there’s no love and flowers flowing around the intersections as far as I can see.

Use Mobily Trip to take friends and family with you on vacation [Freeware]

Really, when it comes right down to it, what’s the point in taking fancy vacations to exotic locations if you can’t share the experience with other people? In the ancient past we would sit our victims down in darkened rooms and bore them rigid with 4 hour photo slideshows, complete with droning commentary and obscure jokes that no-one understands.

TabMinder and LeechBlock stop you wasting time on websites instead of working [Daily Freeware]

Here’s the thing. I never waste time on websites when I should be working. No really. I never dawdle over Hacker News, Reddit, slouch around BBC News or click and giggle at Cracked.com. Why would I do that stuff, when work’s so very very important? I’m sure you folks never do it either, and that it’s nose down from the moment you arrive at your desk till the moment they open the cage doors at the end of the day.

NeverNote is an open source clone of Evernote [Daily Freeware]

If you’ve never heard of Evernote, it’s the very successful cloud (ie Web) based content capturing service. The idea is you run their software in the background, and when you come across something you want to save, like a recipe, photo, news article or even road sign, you just clip it to Evernote and it’s instantly stored online for you to access from any computer anywhere. It’s clever stuff all right.

OpenMeetings, the cool open source web conferencing program, grows up [Daily Freeware]

Way back in the mists of time, or somewhere around 3 years ago, we reported on a little Google Code project which was a rudimentary but functional web conferencing system, with scheduling and audio/video communication. As we said at the time, it was OK, but a little Spartan.

We’re all learning more every day about how to collaborate online. The point is, that’s what networks are for, and the Internet is after all just one giant collection of computers, right?

HomeZada is a powerful free way to manage your home and contents

No matter where you live, whether it’s a small apartment or a luxuriously appointed McMansion, you’re going to be faced with dealing with stuff. Y’know, the kind of things that you forget about until it’s too late. Maintenance schedules, repair manuals, an inventory of your gadgets for insurance purposes, even product receipts to keep track of warranties. It’s all a necessary part of life, but up till now this sort of stuff has been really hard to manage unless you’re some…

Prayaya lets you run a full Windows computer on your mobile phone or iPod

There are times when you don’t want the hassle of carrying around your laptop or other Windows computer, even when you know you’re going to have to do some essential work, like over a weekend vacation. Sure you could use your host’s computer or a nearby Net cafe, but wouldn’t it be cool to have your full Windows system stored on your phone or other memory drive, ready for instant access?

Scrambls turns your browser into a cool encryption machine for private communications

Do you remember when you were small, and you invented your own private language so you and your best friend could chat to each other in the playground, and no-one would understand what you were saying? You didn’t, well you missed out big time. Of course, private languages are only for young folk, because we stop needing them when we get older. Or do we?
