Gemory – inscribe a nano-photo on your diamond for posterity

For a paltry $1500.00 Gemory will inscribe a nano-photograph of your choice onto a diamond of your choice. Actually they inject the photo under the surface of the gem, it’s invisible to the eye and doesn’t affect the value or quality of the jewel at all. Apparently. Oh and just to add some spice to life, you need to send your photo and…ahem…diamond to the processing lab to get the job done. The nano-photo viewer will set you back $300.00…

YouTube comments – apparently they mean something

If this Canadian movie poster (click to enlarge) spotted by The Daily Dairy can be believed then You Tube comments are now being used in movie promotions. What’s next, blog comments for product endorsements? We all know about YouTube comments, we’ve all seen the xkcd comic and what happened next. If this is true then that’s it for me, I mean why bother any more? Game over, good night, thanks again, toodaloo and don’t forget the lights on the way…

Bicycle Built for 2000 – People imitating computers imitating art

Bicycle Built for 2000 is a recording that was created using 2088 different people’s voices assembled into a single song. Each person was asked to sing a small snippet of a song that they had just heard and submit it via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. The song snippet they were asked to replicated was actually a recording of a machine singing “Daisy Bell”, made in 1962 as the first example of musical speech synthesis. The final outcome is a cacophony of…

Portable Nuclear Power Stations – from the WT…? Dept

You’re kidding right? The Russians used to build portable nuclear power stations and drive them around the country? That is just too freaky for words. And they stopped using them after Chernobyl happened? No kidding? Flabbergasted!  Not many know, but Russian engineers have constructed the mobile nuclear power plants that were sucessfully used in distant parts of Russia. Those were small sized self moving fully functional atomic power plants with a small reactor inside. Just imagine, small nuclear power plants…

British Telecom Sucks – how not to do customer service Part II

OK, so here’s an update on the sorry state of my non-working BT landline as featured on the Ferret yesterday. Having done that blog post, I sat around for a while trying to work out how to get around Catch 22 and get someone to listen to my problem, and finally decided to resort to desperate measures. Here’s what happened: At around 5.30pm I decided to go direct to the top, did a Google search and came up with the CEO…

MBL 101 X-Treme Speaker System – 1.5 tons of luxury surround sound

The MBL 101 X-Treme Speaker System costs $250,000, weighs 1.5 tons and features four omni-directional mirror imaged speaker arrays with a single bass tower and integral amplifier. If all that stuff made your pulse race and mouth drool, and you’re a member of a Gulf state royal family, hey, this one’s for you. Remember though that as iPod docks go, it may need a tad more space in the bedroom than you’re used to, Your Highness.  The mbl Flagship, the…

Nikon D3 cut in half – readers of a delicate nature look away now

A blogger in Tokyo snapped these photos of a Nikon D3 cut in half at the Tokyo Eco Products convention in December last year. I can’t help thinking that to pull the thing apart, cut everything in half, polish all the bits and then reassemble it must have taken hours. And check out the lump of glass in the viewfinder. More pictures via the link. Very cool. [Thanks Celinda!] I visited the Tokyo Eco Products convention the other day (2008/12/12)…

Stovokor – the gnarliest Klingon metal band this side of Betelgeuse?

Stovokor is. The first. And only. Klingon Metal Band. On Earth. We have nothing more to say on the subject. [insert lame Kirk joke here]  “…It is said that nothing is darker than the infinite vastness of space…From across this silent void comes STOVOKOR. Five valiant, metal warriors marooned on an insignificant and undeserving planetoid…Armed with a metal forged in the lava of Kri’stak and tempered by the blood of a proud, warrior race. With this metal they shall raise…

aMap – the argument site

aMap is a great example of one of those huh? sites. Yes it is. Look don’t argue. All right argue, but do it with civility using one of these online…ahem…argument maps. The idea is for us all to log on and conduct arguments logically and concisely using a structured template. State your case, build your argument, let the debate begin. Not to rain on anyone’s parade or anything, but most arguments may start out all loving, decent and terribly polite, my…

Nokia queues – Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has a fanbase!

Apparently, as we speak, people are queueing 150 deep IN THE RAIN! outside the Nokia store in London to grab one of them new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic mobile phones. So much for only Apple having handset love. And so much for the UK sliding into ‘official’ recession this morning! Of course it wouldn’t have anything to do with the 5 million music tracks you get access to for free during the first year could it? The old Comes With Music offer is clearly…

Is it going to rain? – the totally minimalist weather forecast

Is it going to rain? is a fun and stripped bare online weather forecast service. Don’t ask for no fancy radar scans, 5 day reports or anything more than just the single word. That way you won’t be disappointed. Happy we.  A small project written for fun, goingtorain.com geo-locates your IP address and checks the weather to tell you, in one simple word, whether it’s going to rain (or snow) today. Careless hands – the UK government loses one computer a week? Really?

According to a recent BBC report the UK government loses one computer a week. Along with 36 Blackberries, 30 mobile phones and four memory sticks. A week. Should we be surprised? Shocked? Flabbergasted? Or cynically shrug shoulders. Answers on a dunces’ hat please, to…  A spokesman said all the incidents had been investigated and that all portable equipment was marked with an invisible dye to help deter or detect theft. There had only been one incident involving the loss of personal…

Automatic Adjustable Wrench – talk the torque

Determined to blur the line between power tools and hand tools, Black and Decker has come up with the Automatic Adjustable Wrench. The Auto Wrench adjusts to the width of the bolt head (up to 32mm across) with just the press of a button. Powered by 2 included AAA batteries, which are good for 650 cycles, the 8″ wrench can also be adjusted by hand in case you’re stuck for batteries and can apply up to 220 foot-pounds of torque….

Terrorist Teapot and Cosy – edgy British table anarchy and a nice biscuit, vicar…?

Terrorist Teapot and Cosy. Um…somewhere deep in the bowels of the CIA/NSA machine, an Echelon operator is desperately trying to make sense of a blog post which combines the words teapot, cosy and terrorist in one sentence. And failing. OK, so we’ll make this easy, Jack. It’s designed to keep your Earl Grey warm while you foment improbable plans to unseat the local village council. See, now it makes sense, right? $44.55 in Danish stuff.  A tea cosy (American English…
