PaperKit – free printable grid paper for all [Freeware]

Graphing or grid paper is one of those hidden treasures that you never realize you’re going to need, until you need it. Sure if you’re a scientific type, student or a mathematician then you’re clearly friends with the stuff, but the fact is that it can be used in lots of places where you wouldn’t obviously think of it. Think about sketching, designing, drawing a plan or a map, just about any place where you need accurate scaleable illustrations.

OK, answer this question. How many times have you wanted to transfer a file, photo or other piece of information like an address or map from one computer in your home to another device like a different laptop, phone or tablet? Should I Remove It – helps you decide which programs you should uninstall [Freeware]

If you’re like most people, you’ll have a ton of software installed on your computer that you’ve accumulated over the years. You see programs are rather like socks. You obtain them from various sources over the years, use them and then they lie forgotten in your bottom drawer (or hard disk folders) for ever more or until you upgrade computers. Whichever comes first.

Find That File – find files from the Internet, Usenet, .edu resources and more

Find That File is a new file search engine which doesn’t just track down web based documents and files, but also digs deep into the bowels of what they call the ‘dark web’ to try and deliver even more useful stuff. You might think that Google does this already, but it’s amazing how often other results come up on the Google page when you do a search for a specific file.

EmailTray – cool free email program controls those message overload blues [Freeware]

Riddle me this: What’s the single most useful, and at the same time most maddening, thing in the whole world? No, not hot wet-wipes, we’re talking email. It’s crucial to our lives and yet a massive burden too. Over the years we’ve tried numerous ways to improve things, including email abstinence (doesn’t work), filters, rigid routines and worse, and failed to make even a tiny dent in our message overload.

Utter! – so long Siri, this is what real smartphone voice control looks like [Freeware]

It’s a funny thing, software. Sometimes it’s not the prettiest of products which work the best, nor even the ones with the best marketing, but instead it’s a surprise coming out of left field, which manages to deliver amazing functionality with no fancy interface and zero marketing.

Buzzscale – movie ratings from social media

Why is it that whenever we have an opportunity to catch up with some leisure time, there’s never anything on cable or satellite we want to watch? Or the movies are lame or the rentals are all out or we’re just plain stuck with trash TV? One way to help find out what’s good to catch is to use the opinions of others, and that’s what this new site provides.

Pressure Net – let your phone improve the world’s weather forecasts [Freeware]

Nowadays many of the latest smartphones come with an interesting new feature that few people know about. Embedded inside the handsets of products from companies like Samsung and Motorola are barometers, small devices which register atmospheric pressure readings. Why? Well according to the guys at Google, they are there to help your phone get a quicker GPS fix. By measuring latitude, longitude and altitude (via the barometer) the satellites can lock on to your location faster, which makes for a…

nPointer – control your PC with a wave of the hand like Tom Cruise…almost [Freeware]

There’s currently a lot of talk about the upcoming revolution in computer control. Voice recognition, gestures, touch and different types of input devices are all being trotted out to see if any stick. We’ve had some real close shaves in the past, voice commands being one, but typically after a little interest we all return to the tried and tested mouse/keyboard option.

Everything you ever wanted to know about USB chargers, but were afraid to ask…

It’s surprising how many things we take for granted. Like the little light that goes on when you open the fridge and the serrated edge on steak knives. One other item we tend to overlook is the humble and yet oh so crucial USB charger. There’s no such thing as a ‘retina charger‘ is there, and people don’t don black turtle necks to extol the virtues of this year’s new charger block on stage. But where would we be without…

How to Make Your Very Own MRI Music Video – The Manual!

A couple of weeks ago we broke the story of the first ever music video made in a multi-million dollar MRI machine, which was picked up by our colleagues at the BBC, TheVerge and Gizmodo and went on to grab 250,000 views in just 2 weeks. Sivu’s Better Man Than He is an awesome debut single, and it helps that I know James personally, and he’s a great guy. Another person who also seems equally awesome is Dr Marc E….
