MJPEG Surveillance – cool free motion sensing webcam security program

MJPEG Surveillance. Nice free security webcam program comes with motion sensing technology which starts the recording when it senses movement in any particular area of the room. It can handle multiple cameras and can convert the JPEG file stream into a proper WMV, DivX or MPEG4 video clip. Lots of other features too, including video editing and auto video recycling which records over the oldest videos first (useful for keeping hard disk space under control).  My best motion detection algorithm so…

50 Awesome Open Source Financial Tools. Er…what it says on the tin. Free personal and small business finance programs which you can use to stay financially healthy and safe for ever. Hah! Phun – awesome physics play box may devour hours of your life

Phun. 2D Physics Sandbox. Warning Advisory: don’t download this software unless you have time to spare. Especially don’t download this if you are in any way attracted to gravity, random shapes, puzzles, physics experimentation and other such pastimes. Video.  Phun is meant to be a playground where people can be creative. It can also be used as an educational tool to learn about physics concepts such as restitution and friction. Popstar – cell phone game gives you control over your own pop star, Tamagotchi style

Popstar is a free Java mobile phone game which lets you live out your fantasies of being Michael Jackson. Or maybe not. Anyway, the idea is that you raise your little star to the heights of fame and success by touring, rehearsing and snorting white…sorry where were we? Oh yes. And buying better equipment. It’s an ad supported game, and needs Internet access on your handset, so you’d better have a flat rate data plan, chum.  The overall idea is…

Kids Web Menu – free children’s web browser protects innocent eyes

Kids Web Menu. Simple and easy to use children’s web browser offers safe customised surfing for tiny tots. You select which sites they can visit from the list of ‘approved’ sites, and the browser presents a simple one click interface which is child friendly. Pop ads are blocked and there’s no address bar so they can only navigate via the icons. I’m not 100% in favour of web nanny programmes (the words trust and arbitrary censorship come to mind), but…

Sun Times – super cool freeware plots climate, aviation and astronomical movements

Sun Times is a very cool freeware program which provides more information than you’re ever going to need on sunrise/sunset times, climate averages and global flight schedules and routes. The data is constantly updated and you can run cool time based animations to view astronomical movements and temperature changes for just about every place on earth. The maps are a little crude, and the interface takes some getting used to, but the lush dataset more than makes up for it. This…

Books In My Phone – free e-books you can downlod to your mobile phone

Books In My Phone. A nice selection of e-books embedded in a Java reader for download to your mobile phone, either directly over the air or via your computer. All out of copyright or Creative Commons of course, so no commercial ‘blockbusters’, but it’s a neat idea nonetheless. As someone who read both Lord of the Rings (for the 3rd time) and Harry Potter on a mobile phone, I can vouch that it’s possible.  The books offered here are either…

SurveillanceSaver – the webcam screensaver now available in a Windows version

SurveillanceSaver. This deliciously subversive piece of freeware accesses over 600 security CCTV cameras around the world and cycles through them via an auto-playing screensaver. Finally we all get a chance at playing Big Brother from the comfort of our homes or cubicle. The original version was Mac only, but now it’s available in a Windows format. Lovely, and a little scary too. (the image above is Bucharest in Romania, by the way)  SurveillanceSaver is an OS X screensaver that shows live images of over 600…

Simple Mail for Firefox – cool embedded email client runs inside the browser

Simple Mail is a cool new Firefox extension which embeds a full function email client inside the browser. Although I can’t see this replacing Thunderbird on my machine, it could be very useful for folks who travel a lot. You could install Firefox and this extension on a USB key and use it as your ‘on the road’ mail and browser. Or even use it as part of a full Mojopac environment install on a USB key. Neato! DoubleTwist. Heh, DVD Jon is back, and he’s carrying more gifts. This new service is a neat freeware desktop application which you can use to convert, share and manage all of your disparate digital media stuff. You do have disparate digital media stuff, right?
