f.lux – new version of the amazing screen light manager adds more features to help us work and sleep better [Freeware]

We first reported on the delicious f.lux freeware program back in 2010, and now three years later, we’re happy to announce that a new version has arrived. For those who don’t know, this innovative program automatically adjusts the temperature and brightness of your computer screen to a) help avoid eye strain from looking at a glaring screen all day and b) help us sleep better by making the screen light softer as the evening progresses, so we can wind down.

YouTube Center – free browser plugin gives you YouTube the way YOU want it [Freeware]

We all love YouTube, silly little girl that it is. But I don’t know about you, there are times when I wish it would be a little more obedient and let me set things up just the way I like. It’s boring having to reset image quality, size and layout each time I access a video on there. And I would also love it if it buffered properly like it used to.

How To Boil A Kettle – the single most important app you will ever install on your phone [Freeware]

There are few things more important than a good solid cup of something. First thing in the morning, last thing at night. During times of stress or loss, or as a part of a hearty celebration, something warm in the hands gives lasting comfort. But, tragically, there are far too many unfortunate people who still have problems mastering the absolute basics of a good brew.

Bye Bye Blackberry – The Top 10 Free BBM Messenger Alternatives For RIM Refugees Everywhere

Oh sweet Blackberry, where did it all go wrong? RIM (parent company of Blackberry) announced recently that it is selling the company for the bargain basement price of $4.7 billion (the company once had revenues of over $19 billion in a single year). Big Launcher – do we really need such a complex interface on our smartphones? Maybe not. [Freeware]

Smartphones are very cool and all, but there are times when they can be a tad fiddly to use. All those options, icons, screens and stuff to navigate through, when all you want to do is take a quick photo, make a quick call or send a fast text. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an alternative which would strip away all the extra stuff and leave you with the bare essentials up front?

1 million free and legal music tracks – announcing the relaunch of our favorite section for y’all [Freeware]

Long time readers will know that way back in Nov 2003 we launched a section of the site which listed a large number of sources of free and totally legal music tracks you could download and keep. The fact is that streaming music is all well and good, but there’s nothing to beat creating your own collection of great music on your device, which you can listen to anytime and anywhere, without having to rely on an Internet connection.

Bloom FM – 22 million tracks that you can borrow and return [Freeware]

There’s no shortage of free music streaming services around, led by the mighty Spotify and Pandora of course. Nowadays though, you’re more than likely paying for the service, because it looks like the music industry successfully crippled the free streaming market with some hefty royalty demands, which is OK, except you have to wonder whether the poor little indie artist ever receives any money after the lawyers have taken their cut.

Flagger – the browser add-on designed to drive government snoops crazy [Freeware]

So people all over the place are rightly a little upset with all the snooping going on, spying on our communities, emails, telephone calls and the like. But so far there’s been little really effective action taken, apart from some noisy street protests here and there, and lots of activists giving TV interviews.

The power of crowds is being harnessed in all sorts of ways nowadays, from shopping coupons to funding dodgy projects, and driving is no exception. Parko – join this community parking club on your phone and banish parking headaches

There’s no doubt about it, for city dwellers, parking is a real drag. It’s not just the uncertainty of knowing whether you’ll find a free spot where you want to go, it’s also the realization that if you can’t find anything you’ll probably spend hours (OK, well it seems like hours) circling around trying desperately to beat someone else to the punch. How demeaning.

Announcing the Hubski Comments WordPress Plugin – a cool way to bring the thoughtful web to your blog [Freeware]

We reviewed the rather fine Hubski.com social community a while back, and if you remember we were rather impressed by the quality of the interaction and content of this new online community. Kind of like Reddit without the LOLCATS. Well it appears we liked the site too much, because no sooner had we finished writing about it, than we found ourselves at the center of some sort of plot to destabilize civilization.
